I was running around harvesting in the morning (IRL time) and was cursing the fact that I got rubber banding (lag spikes) even if there was only three players online. This because we have allot of building structures on the server now. It starts to look like one big city. Or at least 3 cities with some forest in between. When I thought about how lovely it would be if we could build underground structures as well. And yes that would make the server lag even more. However maybe it's possible to separate the upper world with the underworld with a "loading screen" to help with the server lag? If this was possible you could easier build more secure bases that does not take up allot of space on the ground level.
Building a tunnel system or a basement under your house has to be quite expensive though both in material and building time as no one cam come and blow your shit up from outside the structure. I was thinking in the lines of a "tunnel" that is 1x1x1 to cost something like 250 planks 100 low quality metal and 50 leather and take 600 seconds to craft.
This would open up for allot more fun raiding as well. Think how hard it was for the U.S army in Vietnam to root out the F.N.L AKA "Viet Cong" because of there tunnel systems and underground bases.
PS: of course you should be able to collapse a tunnel with c4 from the inside. But it has to be allot of C4 and maybe it has to be placed in a specific pattern too as you could easily trap some one who is inside.

Too complicated, there is a system for Unity that can do this but really it's all just too complicated
Oh, that's right. Rust runs on Unity, doesn't it? Is digging really possible? I'm not familiar with the engine, but I've played around with the WYSIWYG (for lack of a smarter term) editor a bit. Then again, I know some crazy stuff has been done with Unity. Any familiar developers want to weigh in on this?
Is digging possible on the unity engine?
Does it support visportals or similar systems?
If so it could probably be implemented without much more lag, though upon entering the underground visportal there would probably be a bit of a lag spike for a few seconds as everything loaded.
