Just saw this on the Rust Updates Twitter page Skin colour is based on steamid http://twitter.com/RustUpdates/status/574609134248665088 It got me wondering how that would work, anyone want to venture a theory? maybe i should change my steam id to White, Handsome Male, Athletic Build, Blond hair, Blue eyes, 6'3"?
Probably just takes the number and converts it into a colour hex. Or since the SteamID is 8-9 characters, could be a RGB combo. [editline]9th March 2015[/editline] Except skin is not every colour of the rainbow, nevermind.

That's how I would do it.
I really dig this feature.
It could just clamp the hue to the brownish/pinkish hues in-game and then clamp the brightness. That's how I would do it.
Yeah that sounds the most logical approach.
holy shit what, that's insane :v:
I really dig this feature.
should be amusing
It's going to be interesting to see how this affects friend/foe recognition. And I think I have to start a betting pool on how many bans for racism postal is going to hand out in the first week of this on the default branch. :v:
maybe i should change my steam id to White
I'm pretty sure that steam ID are fixed and can't be changed.
I'm pretty sure that steam ID are fixed and can't be changed.
That's correct, they are fixed and cannot be changed
It'll be a busy week i think, I'll go with 15 bans
i think you are underestimating the people of this forum grym;) i will go "at least 10 threads the first day, and 30 bans." for 50 points of awesome.
Hmm ... so basically we are going to be "randomly" assigned a skin color, and cannot change it? sounds like an interesting idea, but not really a long-term solution. People are going to want to be able to select their skin tone, just as they are going to want to select their gender once the female character is in. I think this would be fine to assign everyone a "starting" skin tone, so we don't all start out looking the same, but people are going to want the option to change it themselves.
I like the system the more I think about it, Not being able to choose colour, our features or physical body attributes will make gameplay better. Tho I do still think we should be able to pick a gender, Here is my player on the dev server and Bugs on his dev server, Which I guess will be my skin tone for ever once the update comes on thursday, (Healthy tan and about as close to one as i will ever get) I would like to see how diverse the tone range is anyone else got selfies they can post? Recognition of other players, Unless you are clothed head to foot, You will be able to go "Look that might be Fred he's dark toned", Or "I don't remember seeing a Milky looking guy around here before", and as the system progresses you can say "I don't know that face", You won't be able to hide yourself unless you have an alternative account or some kind of face mask. People covering their face will probably be up to no good. You will be you, and people will know you as people do in real life, spying is another concept here, you will need to find someone who looks the same as another member of an opposing force. Edit: IT could even mean we could get rid of the name tags over the newman, We would not need them.
Yeah i think so, i'd really prefer to control my looks i prefer to look like i do now, devastatingly handsome with a 3 inch long beard.
Haha, I speed-read and got as far as "i prefer to look like i do now, devastatingly handsome with a 3 inch long ... "
not a huge difference in most people i see, but i did see a guy who was (showing my colours here, no pun intended) the colour of a drow, like grey black. it's interesting. at this stage don't think it replaces names, but you can distinguish between people with a glance now, so it's headed the right way:)

I like it. This is so awesome. :D
Part of me really hopes we don't really get a choice in how we look. I get that people want to be able to choose. I want to as well, but the question is does it make sense for the game? I have to agree with kulan. Limit choice to gender. Everything else, like irl, thats just DNA, you didn't get a choice.
I'd be interested in seeing what the darkest dark is and the lightest light is. The only thing that worries me about this, not including the immature racist comments that could possibly take over the chat temporarily depending on the server, is if this gives some kind of unfair advantage or disadvantage by making a player more or less visible in the dark, in the snow, etc. Clothes might factor in, but nakeds could be an issue.
But wait, there's more! https://twitter.com/RustUpdates/status/574910823606390785
Head texture swapping based on steamid - @garrynewman (/main)
https://twitter.com/RustUpdates/status/574928478635692032
Head mesh randomising - @garrynewman (/main)

@Octochat The only way you're gonna get a new face is by playing on a different steam account :)
awesomesauce about the face meshes! i checked the inventory model's colour against my corpse's colour and they match;)
hey mrknifey, we look a like! kulan looks hot btw ;D
It could just clamp the hue to the brownish/pinkish hues in-game and then clamp the brightness. That's how I would do it.
I'd probably hash it first to get a uniform distribution, regardless of (most) potential biases in SteamIDs.
thanks, I got darker with the new update
