• Some quality of life suggestions

I've only been playing Rust for a few days now (although I have played it waaay back, but that doesn't count does it?), and here are a few things that I've felt were missing. So I'll just get straight to it. Gesture Wheel I'm sure something like this is already planned to be implemented, but I'll just reiterate the idea. Check out this quick photoshop job I did. The two "Icons" I made up are "Hands Up" and "Point". Hands Up could be used to indicate that you are unarmed, or being held against your will. Because that does happen. Often... Pointing in pretty self explanatory. [t]http://i.imgur.com/qE1dP2L.jpg[/t] A New Support Beam Right now, the only support beam we have this is very intrusive beam that sits in the middle of the floor. [t]http://i.imgur.com/9RUByG4.jpg[/t] I feel like this beam gets in the way a lot and isn't very aesthetically pleasing. One improvement would be to allow a support beam to be placed in the middle of four touching square foundations, or a ring of triangle foundations. But I feel like this was already implemented at some point and removed. Onto the real suggestion here. I'd like to see a new kind of support beam that looks this like: [t]http://i.imgur.com/MaKdkRh.jpg[/t] I guess there's not much to say about it, since the picture does most of the work. The new support beam would be placed like a wall does, but wouldn't get in the way and restrict other things being placed around it. Pick up Paintings A very simple suggestion for wooden signs and picture frames. I'd like the ability to pick up a placed painting so I can move it somewhere else. Paintings inside a building zone that you have authorization in should allow you to pick up already placed paintings. This beats having to completely re-paint signs or pictures if you want to move your base or something. The Hammer and Chisel I'll start with the Hammer. The Hammer's job is to reinforce, or upgrade, certain structures. However, these structures are limited to items placed by the Building Plan. The hammer should allow the upgrading of other objects that have upgrades. For example, the Wooden Barricade. It's a quick and easy "fence", but not something to rely on in the long run. The hammer should be able to upgrade this into any of the other barricades, provided that the player has the right resources and blueprint learned. This beats having to either destroy the barricade (which wastes time), or place new barricades around the old (which gives an extra layer of defense, but wastes space). I'd also like to suggest the Chisel. The Chisel's job is to "modify" certain structures placed by the Building Plan. This would mostly affect walls, but the idea is pretty simple. The Chisel could modify a Wall into something less than that, like a doorway or window. For example, lets say a small base was built and the owner upgrades all his walls to stone, a very common thing to do. But now the owner wants to expand his base and the only way he can do that is by removing one of the stone walls. His only options are to acquire C4 or hack away at it with tools and weapons for an hour. Both options waste a ton of potential resources and precious time. But if the owner had a Chisel, he could simply select the wall he wants changed and modify it into a new doorway, at the cost of very few resources. I also believe that the Chisel should have the option to out-right remove walls and other structures. With that said, the Chisel wouldn't be able to "upgrade" structures. For example, if you placed a doorway and later wanted to change it to a wall, the Chisel wouldn't be able to do this because the doorway is "less than" the wall. However, it would also be nice to see the Hammer counter-act this by allowing it to modify structures in this manner. That's all I have for now. I'd love to hear what you guys think.
Good ideas and for once not suggested by someone who looks like they have never heard of an English dictionary.

The developer decided he didn't want them in the corners anymore, he wanted them in the middle. I don't know the exact reason, heard people say cause it's less resources, or because pillars on the exterior wall were hard to use? I dunno, a good majority of us liked it the way it was, still hoping that gets fixed. Actually, in the early early days, what is now referred to as legacy build, you could put them in the corner, or in the middle, or even in the middle of the edges, which added a great amount more freedom to building, as you could make 2 layers of walls with only a half block of hallway between them, which came in very very handy. Maybe if they had flying buttresses like yours they would be easier to maintain the exterior wall ones and we could have them back =D The whole thing is still under the works though, so we'll see. Nothing is dumber then to place something that you have at hand, and then have to go through a huge amount of trouble to replace it with something better. Even the material upgrades are somewhat silly for existing building, upgrading to wood first, then to stone, is a huge waste of resources, should have just upgraded to stone right away. That being said they have some ideas for things like doors, where they want a huge variety with different reasons and aesthetics, so this wouldn't work for that, but things like barricades like you mentioned would be great.
I'd also like to suggest the Chisel. The Chisel's job is to "modify" certain structures placed by the Building Plan. I'd love to hear what you guys think.
This would be nice, but it could also be abused. They used to have the ability to remove a wall by holding right click with a hammer and then just remove it, great for renovations, bad for defense. Basically once someone finds that critical item, the tool cupboard, raiding the rest of your base was easy, rightclick->remove, rightclick->remove... They've since replaced that function with a 5 min timer after building or upgrading a wall to be able to remove it, which is ok, but still limiting for long term modifications. It'd be nice to have the feature returned in some aspect, but they'll have some reworking of the system to do to make it not be abused by other players.
Adding to the list, here's another thing I'd love to see. 45-45-90 Right Triangle Foundation/Floor Not much to say about this, but it's incredibly annoying that the current triangle foundation/floor won't "fit" two square foundations. Handicap Door Opener You know those blue handicap buttons that will open doors to buildings? I'd like to see those added. Ok, I know there aren't any handicapped players in game, so let me explain. The handicap button would be placed similarly in the image below. [t]http://i.imgur.com/447Emu6.jpg[/t] The player in Room B is the home owner, while the player outside of Room A is a "visitor". Instead of going through the trouble of having the player in Room B open both doors, he could simply press the handicap button to open the first door in Room A. This allows the "visitor" to step inside. This ALSO allows the home owner to potentially trap the "visitor" inside the room. A kill-box, if you will. Speaking of kill-boxes, here's something else to add to that suggestion. Ravenholm-styled Fire Trap This low-quality picture probably does most of the explaining, but I'll flesh it out a bit more. Lets say that the home owner has determined that the "visitor" is an unwanted guest, and would like to dispose of him. There's two ways of doing this. One way is to just shoot him through the window. The other way is to burn him alive, which is what this method is all about. [t]http://i.imgur.com/uhJ7xaK.jpg[/t] The fire trap would be set up inside room B, much like the handicap door opener. A pipe would run through the window which allows the fire to spew out through it when turned on. This could also be set up in various other parts of bases/houses. Don't let my example stop you from using your imagination. [editline]23rd November 2015[/editline] Forgot to add this to the list as well: A Half, Half Wall I love the half walls. They really help with breaking up certain sections of rooms without feeling like they take up space. However, something I'd like to see is a version of the half wall that only takes up half of a foundation/floor tile. Have another picture. The top graphic is the current half wall, and the bottom is an added version I'd like to see. [t]http://i.imgur.com/i3QQU1C.jpg[/t] [editline]23rd November 2015[/editline]
This would be nice, but it could also be abused. Like, 70% of it's original cost. This would discourage raiders from completely removing someone's base. And the more upgraded a base is, the harder it would be to simply remove things from it. [editline]23rd November 2015[/editline] Adding to that, would it be too outlandish of an idea to say that if a player is authorized to a cupboard for a certain amount of time, should they become permanently authorized?
Adding to the list, here's another thing I'd love to see. 45-45-90 Right Triangle Foundation/Floor Not much to say about this, but it's incredibly annoying that the current triangle foundation/floor won't "fit" two square foundations.
The reason the equaliateral triangle is currently used is because it actually fits the best. All sides being of equal length, all segments fit onto the piece as well as they do on a square, and all 3 sides can be attached to a square foundation. If you have a 45 45 90, one of the sides will be longer then the other 2, which will make joining foundations and using building pieces on those sides very strange. Even if it just stretched that wall to fit, that would make awkwardly wide doors. It could be made to work in programming, but it would be a lot of work, equilateral triangles just work with almost no additional programming... relatively speaking.
Ravenholm-styled Fire Trap This low-quality picture probably does most of the explaining, but I'll flesh it out a bit more. Would be nice to see some logic driven traps the homeowner could try to set to protect his base while he's offline. Que the auto sentry.
The removal of structures with the chisel could require a certain amount of resources. Like, 70% of it's original cost. Honestly, stone is very cheap, and I could see someone bringing 15,000 stone or more if they knew they could get to the cupboard easily and begin dismantling walls and ceilings to search the rest of the base very quickly. On that note, I think something that just took a very long time would be acceptable, say you can only dismantle one thing at a time on any given structure, and it takes 2 hours. It's still feasible for someone who wants to make a renovation, after all if you are removing a ceiling tile to make stairs, just box in above where the tile you are removing is with walls, a door and lock, then set it to remove, and a couple hours later you come back and it's ready for renovation. From a raiding standpoint, no one would wait 2 hours for 1 wall to disappear, unless it had reeeeallly good loot behind it, and even then, picking it down would be faster(ish?). I can see how that could be super annoying as a builder, but it's something, and can't readily be abused by a raider.
[editline]23rd November 2015[/editline] Adding to that, would it be too outlandish of an idea to say that if a player is authorized to a cupboard for a certain amount of time, should they become permanently authorized?
uhh... Don't know about that. I don't know how much it would really add to the game anyways, as someone who is raiding could just break it and build a new one if they wanted to clear out the authorizations.
Some top ideas here! I really really like the handicap button! I'll admit it, I like trapping people, I think it fulfills some deep twisted unconscious desire!
Simple quality of life suggestion: Do not remove major items from the game on a mid-wipe patch. While I agree pumpjacks needed some love and was not running any myself (so i could literally care less) I think it is rather unfair that pumpjacks were removed when they were. People who had spent 2 weeks building and establishing their desert bases logged on to find that all their work was for naught as their large stone walls now guarded nothing. Yes, i know the game is in alpha and we should expect big changes but perhaps changes like this could wait til the next wipe to be implemented so members of the community dont feel like they spent two weeks of their time on nothing. That being said, I support the idea of static pumpjacks as they will generate a lot of conflict for their control.

in my oppinion there is no place for hardly modern stuff in rust. it has to go to get better.
+1 Great ideas on the gestures and support beams. The chisel would work if they could make it that the one who placed it down could only remove it. I like the ideas of static pumpjacks, quarrys, ect.
I'm pretty new at this game, so I haven't encountered most of the issues you've suggested solutions to, but the picture thing is essential, in my opinion. If I'm going to spend two hours painting a nice painting, I'd like to be able to take it down and put it up somewhere else, for instance if I am to move to a different house. It would also be kind of cool of it could be stolen, because then at least you know others appreciate your art enough to take it for their own decorative purposes.
