Check it out guys, I hopped onto the Dev Server and looked at the new features. One of which is Item Durability and a Repair Bench!

This looks really awesome. How do you join a Dev server? I want to join and see this in person.
In official Server on the First tab ;)

Right click on the game in steam and go to properties. Then go to betas and opt in. Then join a server that says DEV in it. They aren't always on though.
Thanks for the preview. I like to see the new water and weather for myself.
I hope there are SOME new models :D
hey oryg1n i liked the video but dont think any of those new items are going to matter unless the get rid of the hackers. a hacker logged on to East Coast 3 large server and destroyed everything for a second time. any input? or maybe what server you play in?

i can't see any servers
Item durability is such a game changer for the better, I can't wait to see this live. No more just running about shooting the heck outta everyone, have to carry and work for multiple guns now. As well as armor.
So is the repair bench the same as a workbench or a separate item?
So is the repair bench the same as a workbench or a separate item?
Separate item.
A bit dissapointed.
As Much as I love new features, I'd like to see them get some of the existing features and bugs to work before adding in new things :D
A bit dissapointed.
Keep in mind that this is no official patch preview. They add and take away stuff to the dev branch as they like - maybe there will be much more before they add it to the next patch or much less of the things seen there will be included in the next patch - the dev branch is rather to try out how things work within the running engine.
If the condition thingy is not fixed before they push out the next update then it won't be part of it etc.
To the op: Great job of informing people - I think everyone is interested in changes - and many people don't even know about the dev server or Trello.
The repair bench seems to be a placeholder - and the water looks totally different on my pc [it has some slight foamish thingy going on, and is not waving at all] so it seems to be quite affected by the GPU one has, but its always been like that with reflective shaders.
nice vid m8.
So many half glass empty people look at the other side sometimes maybe they are fixing bugs aswell as creating new things by far the best alpha game out ATM i expected bugs i personally havent experianced many massive game changers so far im happy with all updates an progress so far . Keep it up Garry and Team
this is slick! nice thank you

Sometimes it's more work to fix old things before adding new things. Yes, they work for the time being, but then when new stuff breaks the old things you end up having to go back in and re-fix things. Keeping things loose and breakable and then tightening them down later is a quicker development approach overall.
Oh wow an update with very little in it. Who cares about the sky, water and repairing (well repair might be cool :P). But honestly this games needs more stuff to do. Add in NPC bandits, make some kind of NPC bases that has good loot in it but you gotta kill a lot of npc bandits. The progression of this game is really slow considering the amount of money you guys have made.....

Why does everyone assume that you can just BUY updates for a game that you're developing? Garry can't just slap a million dollars on a counter somewhere and get instant updates.
I'd say an update every week or two is pretty damn good considering the state of the game.
Not sure how I feel about the durability issue. I know they want to implement it to reduce power creep where people have HORDS of M4's / kevlar and loosing them isn't a big issue. However I just hope the durability loss isn't to fast.
How fast did the durability loss take place? or did it take awhile?
As long as the durability loss isn't ridiculous so you don't always have to farm just to keep your tools working it should be okay.

He said on Reddit that an effing stone hatchet lasts two WHOLE stacks of wood. If that is true, that is dumb as fuck.

I hate it, because we are those guys with a full large crate of M4s, one for MP5, two for shottys, and 3 for pistols. They are all going to be filled with broken guns now. I'm the one in our house of 3 that makes the ammo, the charges, the medkits, food, etc, but I'm almost a hardcore KOS'r/raider, so I'm not the house bitch, but I end up having to fill that role too. My time is going to be spent fixing all the broke ass guns my lazy partners dump in the house. If they do this, I wish we could at least break guns downs, or change it to where any crafted weapon has to have a min of one slot. So many useless M4s that we can't even put holo sight on.

Agreed. I don't have a huge issue with item durability as I believe it does offer more life cycle in the end game, but if they make it degrade to quickly, it just turns into a never ending treadmill, which just drives people away as it just becomes to grindy. Plus its hard enough to grind for resources on more populated servers as it is when people are shooting at you or trying to jack you all the time :P

Agreed. I love how people think, "Why don't they just hire 10-20 more people for the dev team?". They don't realize that bringing more people in could potentially cause more problems than it would fix. I'm completely content with weekly, or even bi-weekly updates.

I think for this system to work a few things need to be put in place:
1.) Durability needs to be slow, very slow but there. They could also make general use very slow but have a characters death drop an items durability a little more if they need a slightly different system. For Example, if your in full kevlar every 20 m4 bullets would drop it 1% or something, however a death would drop it 3% or something. That way if the armor is changing hands a lot it will drop faster.
2.) If weapons will become unrepairable at some point they need a way to salvage the mods off the guns. For instance holo sights ect should be able to be removed at the repair bench, then the rest of the gun scrapped for say half the metal it took to make it. So a M4 you could get your weapon mods back and 15 low quality metal back. Same goes for armor, salvaging it should give you some resources back. This would reduce the grind and hardship of wearing out items.
3.) The cost to repair has to be fair so its not a never ending treadmill like you said to keep things working.
Having a stone hatchet be useless after mining 2 stacks of wood is a little much imo, by a long shot. The first while you will be to busy consuming resources on your tools to even get close to setting up a foundation, walls, door, roof.
He said on Reddit that an effing stone hatchet lasts two WHOLE stacks of wood. If that is true, that is dumb as fuck.
First, you're lucky you can even use a stone hatchet for anything as quickly as you can, cutting up logs from a tree using a stick attached to a rock is insanely unrealistic, and second, two stacks of logs is 500 (I think?) and 500/7 is 70 hits. It lasted 70 hits. The item you spent a handful of wood and logs on lasts plenty of time, I'm sure refined items are going to last much longer. Durability might not be something people like, but it's realistic and makes sense.

This patch is probably going to cause a lot of servers to reset anyway, I doubt this will be a problem, and if it is, it's really the fault of the server owner.
If they implement this poorly the game will be broken til the next patch. If the game is broken players leave. The more that leave the less come back.
Here's hoping they don't royally fuck this up.

Actually 2 stacks are roughly 140. And comparing the game to real life is idiotic. If I get shot in the chest with "cloth armor" on I'm dead. Even with a .22
People who have an issue having a bunch of broken items in their inventory or storage, you have to think about what they can add to alleviate the issue somewhat. They add a repair bench so chances are they will be adding a de-synth/de-craft bench, ie...Put broken M4 into the slot and get back LQ Metal depending on how many times it has been repaired. (You craft an M4 you get 5LQM back. You repaired the M4 once, you get back 4LQM.) Either way.
I'm sure if you have thought of it, so have they. That is why we play their game and not making it.

The game isn't a survival simulator, its about having fun, and when you make the game to much of a grind people just leave. I agree the game needs a way to widdle down the stock piles of guns that start to circulate after a month or so without a wipe, but they need to find a healthy balance between the two.
You want to talk about realism? when was the last time you saw a mutant bear or wolf trucking around a metal pair or stairs, these realism arguments are getting old. Its a game have fun with it! If things get to real I'd rather just play real life instead.
