I hope I'm not just being retarded here but I can't seem to mine any rocks, I spent a good half hour running around the map just smacking every rock I saw and none of them give me anything.
I tried killing myself to, am I doing something wrong?

You don't hit the big mountain rocks like that. There are rock and wood nodes scattered around the map, usually in middle of fields and stuff, not on the mountains.
Your using the wrong tool you need to use the one on 3 not 1
Ores will spawn around the map
