• Am I alone in that I just like the peaceful aspect of rust, or PvE?

I've been watching videos on youtube from different forum members and I see why it's fun to go to war or have gun battles, but I actually enjoy the game because of gathering, storing, and building. Player vs Environment. I guess I've stuck around or fell in love with Rust because I always get my stuff stolen and never really have a chance to "complete" my builds before someone ruins it by putting a pillar in the middle of the foundation or something. But for me, I enjoy that aspect. I now play on an empty server because of it. I've never played minecraft and I'm not interested in playing legos, as I do enjoy the realism of the graphics. The visual of that game do remind me of legos, so I just can't get into it. Am I playing rust for the wrong reason (not that I will stop playing or other's opinions matter THAT much in my Rust life, but for discussion sake)? Also, when I watch videos of guys walking up and saying friendly, just to shoot the other guy in the face, I get turned off. I guess I play with "game" integrity in that if I say friendly, I mean it. That no longer has meaning and I know I am a girl or just old fashion, but KOS is the biggest downside I guess to PvP. No realism in that in my honest opinion. Unless it was a rock or bow battle. For the record, in Fable I refused to do anything evil. lol
you're starving and you see some other potentially dangerous dude running around with meat in his trousers. how is KOS not realism? also if you want friendly servers. play on a PVE server. :) there are lots of others who share your interest in PVE also, stop refeering to your opinions as girly etc, it just creates more sexism in the world arguing that you are a certain way because you are a girl.
I do agree with the fact that people use PvP to much.. But this game doesn't have alot to offer yet on PvE side. You fairly quickly gather stuff and build your base, easy to get guns.. And well yeah what's left? You get tired of shooting bears, hunting that pig.. Or simply hitting rocks. You want to shoot people because it gives you a rush and victorious moment (even some people feel cool if they shoot a naked dude with a rock) But i must say.. KoS is annoying it is, but alot of people abuse the "friendly" people aswell. Some people walk around as noob "caveman" but actually having a shotgun between their banana and once you bend over to give them your chicken they shoot you between the eyes. Once that happens, you simply kill everyone because you never want that to happen again.. So i really hope they're going to add weapon straps around your waist (if it makes any sense) so you can see someone having a gun. I personally still don't like to shoot everyone. But yeah..I should do it though since people are shit sometimes.
PvP is my favorite part of the game. PvE is ok i guess but isnt as fun IMO. Also just a heads up dont try and let people know your a girl people will hit on you for this or pick on you. Im sure your glad to be a girl and all but dont go having profile picture from bottom breast up but instead just use your face instead. Im not trying to sound like a dick or anything but just some girl gamers try and use their feminine bodies and looks to get there ways(Ewhore) is all. I think the game is way too PvP focused at the moment.
you're starving and you see some other potentially dangerous dude running around with meat in his trousers. how is KOS not realism?
In reality, a bunch of people trying to survive are much more likely to group up and work together than just kill each other out of mistrust or for someones meager possessions. That's why people traditionally live in camps or villages or towns.

There are animals everywhere and KOS in an environment with animals everywhere will never be realistic to me. That's deathmatch. It's a video game so I am not mad about it, but don't sell me on the idea of it being realistic. The last thing I'd do in that situation is run around with a shotgun stalking bases, and KOS. I'd be gathering, storing up to build a more secure place, and minding my own business. That's just me though. :) *Edit. I mention I'm female because well, I'm female. If that helps give other forum members insight on why I am passive in game, then okay. With every white knight, there is the anti white knight, that lashes out just to show everyone he isn't a white knight. Both want attention. Then you have normal nice people who know how to socialize around anyone, and really just don't care. I prefer the latter.

So I've had to learn more than just the game itself. I never really hit that endgame on PvE. And yes, I get that hearing someone say friendly and still kill you makes for big laughs on youtube and ruins the other person as far as, trusting the term "friendly" ever again. Viscious cycle. I guess I'd rather just die and respawn, trusting people in world, than just kill someone on sight because it's fun. I can do that on deathmatch games all day, and not pretend it's a survival game.

I mean - with friends PvP is the only thing we can do. If there was ever a time where group survival against the environment was a challenge I would have no problem doing it with my group. Problem is that right now there is no challenge. You simply gather and build with no consequences other than the bears and wolves which are circumvented with a single foundation.
I'm a fairly passive player myself. I avoid fighting in this game and dedicate most of my time to gathering, building and admining. You really should try to find a PVE server though. I prefer PVP because I like the tension it provides and though I don't KOS I will throw down when needed. It's fun!
I think that if PVE were expanded on more in the future, more people might get into it more. I love PVE, but as stated by some others, I don't feel challenged enough by the current PVE content. Expansion on things like exposure debuffs, hunger debuffs, thirst, exhaustion, disease etc would make for more challenging PVE, at least in my opinion. I think it's been mentioned a few times before (i know i've suggested it) something similar to the Frostfall mod for Skyrim for exposure, and the Realistic Needs & Diseases (also for Skyrim) might add some spice to the PVE bowl.
I think you'd probably really enjoy Minecraft with a good texture pack, actually. I don't understand the allure of PvE. Once you have a bow and 10 arrows, you'd have to work at dying. How long can that fun last? The environment poses a challenge for maybe an hour or two, and then you could carry around a foundation, agro 10 wolves, plop down your foundation, stand on it, and kill them all with impunity. The computer AI is not particularly robust (which is not intended as a slam on Garry, most computer AI in most games is not particularly robust). The real challenge of this game comes from the other players. If you just want a sandboxy experience where you can build stuff and shoot an occasional deer, that's cool, but its not for me. I want a challenge. I want my heart to be pounding as I'm trying to gather what I need to survive/thrive. The PvE experience just doesn't do that for me. I know what to expect from wolves and bears.

I am afraid that once I run out of reasons to gather I will just stop playing. :(

I like to gather, I LOVE the base design aspect(your genearal clutter of your loot room in episode 6 almost killed me inside) however I also love to raid / run around and shoot at people. For me I can't do one of these to long before I get tired of it. So after 2 or 3 resources runs / building I'm itching to draw my P250 and head out somewhere. However I would love to get a group together again where we had mixed roles. The group I usually played with mostly quit until more content comes out and some bug fixes, however prior to them leaves we had a collector/base builder. He just loved to collect and base build which was great as we would just protect him or let him roll with that while we raided towns and did other activities. We had another person that was a great shot so he usally ran point when we did raids or ran around. The group all had there strengths that played on each other. I think if you found a good server with a good group you could totally play that roll and sub into others when you feel like you wanted to. Don't let other dictate how you want to play the game. On a side note, I guess your mail box was getting destroyed as I noticed you cut out the cleavage in your pic lol, probably wise.
Rusty, that's how I first started. But I wasn't really learning anything because people kept giving me guns and resources. Although the social aspect was a bit more entertaining, I prefer to do everything at my pace, so I don't sign on one day and the boxes are all full of stuff. It's more of a relaxing hobby, to collect and gather, slowly getting enough resources to build a huge base. I think maybe taking the game slow at my pace has been the best time I've had. I will admit that the environment is not that hard because of my sleeping bag. I can always cheat and run back and grab my stuff. I still die a lot though. Also, signing on and being raided hasn't been fun, but it's kept me playing I guess.
The game does need more to do in order to break out of the pvpcentric game that it becomes 4 hours in. There's also a distinct lack of community on servers when you can just peace out to another one and have full inventory + kevlar/M4 in 4 more hours. If the game were elongated, and the time to create your dude on a server to the time where you were fully stocked was much longer then you would be invested in the game, server, and by default the community of that server. That being said losing everything is a key part of Rust, so I'm not sure if we'll ever get to a point where just server hopping on over to a greener pasture is more difficult. It's a delicate balance and the dev and design teams of FP have a lot of thinking to do in regards to the game. They declared in the Early Access message they're not sure where they're going, or what direction they want to take the game. I'm hoping they try to make it more complex and get people involved in a server much the way NWN did. At the same time, they'll lose a lot of the FPS players who just want to kevlar up and shoot anything that looks like it moves.

On my first real server I was raided and my stash was on the 3rd floor or 5 floors. Some how the person raiding me cleared out most of my base and completely missed my crafting room and stash room. Nothing like logging on to all your stuff and walking out of your room realizing someone has blown up so much. Lucky for me they didn't put doors up and lock me in but I also had a small amount of C4 if they did lock me in. When I realize the design of my house is working I love getting raided. If the world was going to hell everyone would be out for themselves. When the best logic would be to group together and rebuild. I would assume most of the community has seen The Walking Dead. If everything went to hell IRL I would make friends with the closest farmer that would let me in.

Without lawmakers, police, firefighters, tax collectors, IT helpdesk support, military, press, and burger flippers. It's a world where once you realize you are free of all the burdens of society, your mentality becomes what society would call "insane". So in short, Rust is a simulation of homicidal insane people run amok
Traps, base design, rugs. This for me, would trump needing a female character. Until it does get implemented tho there is a way you can make spike walls into a make shift trap in your base. If you stack ramps on your bottom floor then put small spike walls on top of the ramps(Could be large I forget now) the spikes will actually clip through the ceiling just a little. You can see them on the next floor however this can be fixed by putting LOTS of sleeping bags over them :) Then you put a BUNCH of large storage boxes in the back and wait. Each step a person takes is ruffly 25 dmg, and most of the time people don't know what is happening and run deeper... then die. When I first found out about this I made a small base like this and left the metal door open on purpose. Was a fun experiment :) Curiosity got the best of most people. [editline]18th March 2014[/editline]
So in short, Rust is a simulation of homicidal insane people run amok
AKA like 50-70% of the population if no law existed. We sadly give humanity more credit then is due. Take that and add desperation / survival into the mix and people get really squirrely.

For instance, instead of seeing a naked guy holding a rock, I see a guy in kevlar holding a shotgun running at me. I am sure some folks set up traps purposely wearing nothing and holding a rock just to kill you. I get it. However, I can't put myself in the game mindset of gathering resources to build a safe haven, gathering resources to learn and build weapons for protection, but turn off the part of me (the in game mindset of trying to survive) that doesn't think I'd become some mass murdering untrusting person. I won't just KOS, even if that means I have to respawn back at my sleeping bag. I like to get into the games, and if i wanted to play deathmatch, I would go on console and play Call of Duty. I'm not going to be a douche just because everyone else is. That's all I am saying. I guess I'm weird like that. [editline]18th March 2014[/editline] Rusty, do you guys have any videos on the traps now? Actual working traps?
One sec I have to try and dig up the video on the trap idea I was talking about, but this is an imager pic the guy who figured it out posted: http://imgur.com/8tiv9BZ I'll dig up the video and post it if I can, however other then this setup, there is no in game footage of the new bear trap or traps they will put in, just art drawings from trello https://trello.com/b/1iXNdiYw/rust-art
So in short, Rust is a simulation of homicidal insane people run amok
There is a great debate there, for sure. I agree Rust is a simulation of homicidal insane people who run amok because dying means nothing. However, remove a player from that server for 24 - 48 hours, and watch him be much more polite and human (kind of like how we are all somewhat normal and polite here on these forums, because when you "die" (ban), you're done. It's easy to run amok when you die and respawn at your sleeping bag every 4 minutes. Our own self preservation trumps the rush of bullying, running amok, or base raiding in reality. Even without laws, you still do not purposely put yourself in harms way, because self preservation keeps you sane. However, that is a whole different debate. It's easy to turn into some wildling when you know dying means nothing.
no way i would buy this game without pvp
