ETA for bringing the experimental branch in as the default
17 replies, posted
I know this thread has probably already been typed up a million times... but I really need to ask. When is the experimental branch going to be integrated into the default version? I feel that as a community we have all been very patient and it kills me that one of my favorite games hasn't had a substantial update in a while. So I need to know realistically, when am I looking to see the updated version? June? July? Am I being too short-sighted? I just feel that the lack of progress that I've seen so far is disheartening as I really felt from the get-go how much potential this game had. I know I'm probably being impatient but at the same time I haven't seen any real updates for over a couple months.
Thanks,
A Concerned Rust Owner

There's no need to be concerned, Mr. Rust Owner.
When will the reboot be default?
When there’s more people playing reboot than default we’ll make it the default. We’ll put the reboot on another `archive` branch so you can keep playing it if you want to.
When will that be?
A while away. While we are making real serious progress in the reboot.. and we think it looks and performs better – not all the gameplay elements are in yet. We’re missing major features like AI and building. We don’t expect anyone to play it properly until those are in.
Why are you doing this? Why not just update the default?
After a few months of trying to update default and failing to update at the rate people wanted, we decided this was the way forward. The old code is very limiting in pretty much every way possible. When we originally released on Steam we expected to get a few loyal players, to update regularly and to tidy the code up as we went along. Now that 1.6 million people have bought the game we feel we need to make things happen a bit faster than that. And this is happening. Everything you see on the experimental branch has been made from scratch in the last few months.
Thanks nut huggers. That isn't an ETA
Your ETA is shut up and sit down.
So I can safely assume that the only person who isn't a retard in the thread is myself? That's because there's one simple question and not one direct answer. *golf clap* Take your talents to SPED classes, boys.
Try experimental branch, it's receiving near constant updates. The retard in this thread is the one who won't accept the answers he's being given.
There is no solid ETA:
When more people are playing experimental than the other version.
As a community, you have been as impatient as toddlers with crack addictions.

Christ, you take things personally too much.
Step away from the keyboard. Take a deep breath. Go for a walk, perhaps - they're refreshing.
Now then.
The answer is, we don't know because we're just regular players, not Facepunch employees. Only Facepunch could possibly know what the ETA is, and I'm willing to bet they don't actually know yet (it's too early to know).
In software, and game development particularly, deadlines are meaningless - it's impossible to know that it's actually going to take as long as you think.
Everybody and their mothers have read the playrust.com devblogs. They're pretty devoid of any commitment as far as a deadline. Saying "a while away" doesn't hold the devs accountable for anything... guys, you realize we've basically gone since march without any major updates, right? It was being updated usually once a week when the game was first created. I realize they're basically re-programming the game but JFC it's almost June. I think that asking for a deadline on experimental going live isn't too much to ask. A while away gives nobody any perspective on when anything will be done.
Now, to address elix, I'm not going to be playing experimental because the game is practically unplayable from what I've heard. I want the rust experience to rival what I first bought in December. That's not asking for too much. Also, I personally have not been impatient in the slightest bit. I'm just asking when we might actually see an update... Give me a month of the year, a rough estimate. Hence the problem here... as a community, we have given the developers millions of dollars and I feel that at the minimum they should be letting us know when these changes will be implemented... asking for a month of the year isn't that much.
Killa, also not taking things personally, I'm just realizing that basically I'm not going to receive a response that isn't from a fanboy who'd be willing to get on their knees and let Garry personally brick all over their faces. Dealing with the likes of Elix is pointless, as you can see, he has 6k posts on these forums (probably thinks he's pretty cool for that, I would say maybe you need to get some fresh air once in a while) and because of that status he thinks he can be a complete tool to other people pondering when an update will be. Just saying, grow up, bro. I asked a simple question.

I'm not entirely sure I'm the one who needs to grow up.
The answer you have received is a perfectly logical answer coming from knowledge of how these things work.
Where I work, we don't give ETAs on prototype software, because we have no idea how long it's going to take to go from basic prototype to fully functional release candidate.
Same here - what they have right now is a prototype of the reboot. Until it starts looking like a finished game, they probably won't be giving any ETAs, nor should they (it's likely that if they do, they'll blow right past it due to some unforeseen setback or two - because shit happens, such is life - and then the release date becomes meaningless and no better than if they had said nothing at all)
Using the "fanboy" argument pretty much marks you as not worth listening to around here.
You should actually try the experimental branch instead of listening to what people say. You complain about the lack of updates and then refuse to see the constant updates going on. Sit down and shut up and let the professionals do their job.
Post count is an equally weak argument, btw.
Here's an estimate. Plan for Christmas, jump for joy if it comes this summer. Either way its a big job rewriting an entire game from scratch. Looking back at March saying "JFC it's almost June" doesn't make you sound patient at all. If you had just read the blogs they've been putting out you'd know the answer to your thread's question already. Not to mention you are not the first person to post demands for an estimated timeframe from a job that can't possibly be estimated in the first place. Even if they did force a deadline, it only puts unneeded pressure on the developers. We want them to take their time and do this right. So far they are doing a fantastic job of it. Insulting the community, including Garry himself, isn't going to win you any favor for your relatively stupid question.

Saying that we don't have an ETA doesn't make you a fanboy. It makes you someone answering the question with the information available.

Yeah elix, chill out man, he was just politely asking a question.

u should stop for a few posts acting like a smart ass son of a bitch and the boss of the forum, u probably know more then the most here about the game so with 1 answer you could have given to that guy what he wanted, a damn straight correct answer in he's question but you dont do it, u prefer to show a bit of your sarcasm and how dumb you are.. the one not worth "listening" around here is YOU..
P.S: if someone wants to suicide he can climb to that guy's stupidity and dive down to he's IQ

I'm not sure what part of "we aren't Facepunch employees" is so difficult to understand.
... are you retarded?
garry has consistently been updating us on every single advancement made, even if it's as small as "this guy finished his bag-models"
they're building a game from scratch, keeping us updated on exactly what they're doing—and if they don't feel there's enough for an accurate ETA, then we (obviously) can't get an ETA. we're seriously getting as much as we could possibly get from a game developer.
shut up, you spoiled baby

Real simple here man.
OP asked a question.
Someone answered it.
OP shot back with an absolute shithead reply.
Then elix came in and fired off his usual rhetoric. His response wasn't unwarranted.
Also, marking your post with 2 valedictions is redundant and makes you look silly.
Peace.
Cheers.

it's for release on tuesday alongside a total refund for your patience. didn't you know?
thank you for sharing your amazing skills of deduction. maybe you can apply them to figuring out when the total rewrite of the game will be done, and let us know the answer since obviously our answers aren't the one you are looking for.
