some I came back after a year not playing rust, well I checked out new rust from time to time but it didnt really seem playable and now since I came back it seems like its really playable now, pretty smooth..
My only concern at the moment is that the maps seems to be way to big for how many players are on each server.. at time i play on server with 60-90 players but I can run around for an hour and maybe run into maybe 3-5 players. I miss the old rust, the rust were you can get into a rock fight at a given moment, having to watch your back when farming nodes, rad towns actually being contested instead of players walling them off from other players...
The map seems like I run around for every not doing shit but wake-a-barrel game mod.. there is no force in pvp atm there is nothing to really fight over besides the airdrops..
Am I missing something? is there a special locations were everyone is building at?
I really want to transition into the new rust but man it just doesnt seem like there is as much pvp as in the old rust.. or maybe its time to take down the old rust and make everyone get on the new rust and fill up these servers so there is more pvp..
What are you'll thoughts all this?
It's the other way around. Maps are way too small. -__-
there are three sizes with the average being 4000. I found with a server of 40+ players a 4000 starts to feel small. I played on one with 90 and I ran into a lot of players.
I do agree that folks walling off Rad towns is not nice - there needs to be a way to keep monuments from being walled off.
id love to see more 64km^2 maps, but id love also to have new transportations (horses, motorbikes, cars, trucks, dunebuggies, bicycles, rail hand made veichles)
i play in Facepunch Milan, which is 16km^2, way too small.
I think too that the map cant be big enough!
In legacy I knew where I was on the map after 2 seconds when I joined a new server.. and after 10 minutes of walking I could reach nearly every location on the map!
In new Rust I got lost in the desert once and i followed a street for about 2 hours and didnt saw the same spot twice.. It amused me to no end XD ...
Dont forget that this is a survival game .. and beeing lost in the wilderness is just as much of a part of it as building a home and hunting animals.
For the last few weeks we have been stuck at 4k maps. Before that, many of the servers were twice to four times as big. After that, it seems claustrophobic being able to run from one end of the map to the other in about 15 mins...
Hey, guess what? Maps are 4km x 4km right now (but are supposed to be able to go up to 8x8). Legacy has a playable map area of 6x6km. Map size isn't it.
What you're experiencing is a map where everyone doesn't already have the hotspots memorized before even connecting to the server. People won't congregate in specific areas as much when there aren't established strats defining those areas as the optimal places on the map that are identical to every server.
Radtowns aren't as important as they were in legacy, so walling them off is not that big a deal and tells you what kind of people play on that server.
Look for servers that advertise a 2000 map size. Some use tags like TINYMAP or SMALLMAP. IMHO this is a good size for a small server with < 15-20 players at any given moment. More than that and it's constant firefights / raiding with limited resources. If you like that sort of thing, tinymaps are where it's at.
Personally I like smaller maps. I get to explore without getting lost. No more spending 30 minutes realtime sprinting across an island.
This is pretty far-fetched, but it would be nice if maps could dynamically resize. Maybe an admin could see that their tinymap is now regularly hitting 30+ players, so he spawns in a few islands within swim distance.
with the updates on Thursday (fingers crossed) will we see 8x8 working without issues? I have little experience with the bigger maps but heard about performance issues. my server (US Texas Lonestar) is a 4x4 and the server with 10 users is only at about 5% CPU
Also Any plans to support bigger then 8kmX8km?
I imagine eventually we'll see greater than 8x8km. However, it's a server performance issue, and right now I think over 4x4 crashes and that's the reason maps aren't any larger, but don't quote me on that. It's also a size issue for the current population sizes the server's able to support without performance going insane. No point in giant maps with only 200 players, but I don't think the server's yet able to handle, say, 3,000 simultaneous actual players yet.
2,000 players and a 32x32km map that wipes once every 3 months would be pretty amazing, because you'd have enough people and enough space for a dedicated group to go out into an area nobody goes to and build an entire village and establish ground rules for trading/living with them. However, that's the dream, not the present reality, and Rust still has a long way to go yet.
I would argue that the current maps are too small. Even on the largest map it is very hard to find a place to build off the grid. In legacy I would build out in the waste and never get raided. I didn't mind the run to and from the main play area.
I like building hidden bases but in the current maps that is damn near impossible. No biggie. But I'd hate to see even smaller maps.
2,000 players and a 32x32km map that wipes once every 3 months
I'd never stop playing
Thank you all for your replies.. maybe I just haven't put enough hours into the new rust to be able to really comment on this issue it seems..
To the guy that says he gets lose on a road for 2 hours.. the first couple hours of playing on any given server I learned that map after just exploring and getting to know that map for that server.. so I dont see how you can get lose for that long :P
@Elix I guess i get your point on the whole hotspot situation.. and it saddens me that rad towns dont get fought over anymore b/c thats were I usually went for fights, I dont really care to go into them but they were the usually hot spots other then next valley in old rust for animals..
maybe I am just not looking hard enough for people to fight.
still looking for an assault rifle bp going on 4 days now and still no assault rifle bp or bolt >.<
