1: Is there a way to snap foundations to anything besides another foundation? I've seen some buildings where they appear to do this (foundations at multiple levels all on the same grid, etc) but I can't seem to get it to work. I can't snap one foundation higher or lower than an adjacent foundation, only at the same height, and if I have a floor I can't snap a new foundation to it. This is how it has always worked for me so I wouldn't be surprised if it's not possible but then how are other people building like this?
2: Is the building template really shitty for everyone else too? I never had a problem with it before but now it is almost impossible to place things where I want. I have to twist and jump and look in the completely wrong direction from where I want to build something. I can be looking at a 1x1 gap in my 2nd level floor and it loves to put the template outside the walls of my house and 6 feet from where I am looking. It was fine a few weeks ago so what is going on?
Foundation steps snap to foundations and let you change levels. You can remove the steps after you have the foundation placed.
I was trying that but it seemed limited to the point of almost being useless. It seems like it lets you build uphill on certain perfect slops, but you still can't build downhill, many slope angles don't work right, and in tight areas you don't have space to build the network of temporary foundations to reach the heights you need at the right locations.
1: If you wanted to build a bridge across water, it seems like you have to start at the bottom of the water and not at the shore. If you start at the shore you have no way to continue the foundations lower, correct?
2: If you are on a group of rocks you have no way to snap foundations across multiple rocks. You can/need to use floors to bridge the gaps between the rocks but because foundations won't snap to floors you have no way to get everything on the same grid?
3: If you are building a long wall but there is a river or dip inm the way then you are screwed. You can't snap the top of stairs so you have no way to get your alignment downhill. If there is a bump or hill in the way you have a similar problem. You can use stairs to get up the hill but then you have no way to get down on the other side.
Am I missing something or is it really uphill-only for alignment?
You can build up and downhill, although sometimes a slope will be too steep (some experimentation with building and demolishing twig foundations/steps may be needed to get it right).
Building downhill you need to place the foundation stairs from the ground below (don't stand on the foundation) so they slope down. You can go up/down in half levels (one set foundation steps) or full levels (two sets foundation steps). For half levels using blocks on top of the lower set of foundations may be useful if you want to keep everything on the same level.
Properly lining up foundations across 2 rocks is not possible, but by building a bridge across from the first rock and then experimenting with the position of foundations on the second you may be able to get them lined up visually, if you get it right there will only be a very small gap. You'd then split any structure between the rocks into 2 (and pillars everywhere for stability).
As Alex says:
- to go up with foundation stairs stand on the foundation, and
- to go down hill, stand on the ground looking at the foundation.
Ok I see. It's strange that you can only do it from the bottom. It would be soooo much simpler if foundations would directly snap to other foundations at normal height as well as both higher and lower half or full height offsets. Snapping foundations to existing floors would be pretty sweet too.
