You should probably be standing, that way you can get your whole body into the motion. Really you want to start at the lower back (don't put too much strain on it, just a gentle tilt), then follow through with the shoulders and then elbows so that as much force as possible goes into the axe. Standing also gives you a height advantage, so the axe can pick up a bit more force from gravity and give you (essentially) more chopping power for free.

You need to find one of those sequoia trees. You shouldn't miss them they're approx 100m tall. Once completely gathered they actually give only 49500 wood instead of what people think.
