I'm sure this has been discussed before, but a quick search didn't pull up the hits needed, so here it goes. Brewing, which would require a still and ingredients. The still is a pressure cooker, essentially, requiring a pot and seal-able lid (can be clay), along with tubing (metal, wood or vine) to collect and cool the generated steam. Sugar would most likely be from sugarcane, and would need to be shredded and boiled. Hops could also be grown, for various beers and flavorings. Yeast is wild, and can come from honey (another sugar source), or cultured from fermenting grains in water. The purity of the water and yeast would affect the end result. Suggested uses: High grade fuel. Substitute for low grade fuel: would increase production, but decrease lifespan of the production unit, as the high grade fuel would burn out the motor. Introduction of the Stirling steam engine, needing high grade fuel and water to operate. Would increase production for motor-driven applications, with the added risk of explosion due to the pressure and high generation of heat. Wood could be used with charcoal for a lower overhead cost, with decreased production, though the explosion chance would stay the same. Sanitation. When wounded, there is a chance of infection. Use alcohol and bandages to cleanse the wound and promote healing. Can be used to clean, sterilize, and restore a small percentage to a metal tool's health. Can clean wooden and stone tools, but will degrade them due to the wood's absorption. Hunting. Can be used for trapping, with saturated bait. Animals would be able to smell the alcohol, decreasing the chance of success, with a lower overhead cost. Could be used to sedate targets from a distance, by soaking wooden arrowheads in high proof alcohol. Can also be used with wooden spears. Social. Shenanigans and hijinx! Get drunk and dance around the fire...and maybe be set on fire! Increase in building speed, with decreased structure strength due to building while drunk.
Good ideas you have! c: +1 :p
I like everything but the alcohol spears and the chance of the sterling engine exploding. Maybe have the lowest tier of engine capable of doing such, but irl it would take a lot of pressure to make an engine explode and no one would use an exploding engine. As for the spears, a significant amount of alcohol needs to enter the bloodstream in order to affect someone like that. If that was all it took, then pouring alcohol on a wound to sterilize it would be an extremely dangerous operation. Everything else is a great idea though! we need all sorts of chemistry in rust [fuels, drinks, poisons, explosives, drugs, crafting components (glues, epoxies, kevlar, mylar, varying grades of steel etc) etc]!!

There are so many other poisons that would be more effective. Also high grade fuel would increase the life of machines because they are cleaner and wouldn't gunk things up.
Thanks for the responses, and yeah some of the ideas are just that: brainstorming ideas to justify an addition to the game. Though, if filling your bota bag from streams gets added, then alcohol could help sterilize the water, unless you enjoy typhoid. As for burning out motors, that thought was only for those set to use low grade fuel, unless the miners are diesel, in which case high grade fuel would increase productivity, given the costs in materials/time to make alcohol. Again, though, just brainstorming to justify an addition and have it contextually make sense.
You could force people to drink lots of it then send them on their merry way not being able to control properly with screen all blurred. :)
