Steam does not have gender preferences. Also, even if there were a gender preference on steam, what if your brother/sister made your account and you are the opposite gender.
I'm going to have respectfully disagree because I just don't think it would work very well, and if players want to play as the opposite gender they have no chance at it. Should be random or customizable.
I find it interesting that one way or another people always want control. Pretty sure it's going to be random.

Playing as a woman could have severe disadvantages. I mean, imagine you are being chased by a bear, and then you suddenly notice that another Newman is wearing the same boots as you, only wearing them better! You get totally distracted by this and the bear eats you! Or you are running for the airdrop, and you realise you have got on the red hoodie with the green urban pants, (colour clash)! By the time you have run back to the base to coordinate your outfit, someone else has made off with the airdrop!
