[CONCEPT] Barrel Lid Shield plus drunken concept art
11 replies, posted
This concept is pretty simple,
Take the top and bottom off a Barrel,
Cut View Hole,
Bolt em together,
Add a leather brace,
Add vintage car door handle.(Could even add a VW hub cap or 2 mixing bowls for a shield boss)

My favorite part is that you were drunk. But seriously, nice concept!

I've been thinking I should do something else, but just haven't had the time. I still have to finish up some stuff for the building planner. Plus I don't have any new ideas.
I totally disagree the use of shields, it will disrupt the pvp. Beyond that, who in real life is able to carry a heavy shield with one hand and aim and shoot with the other hand?

I'm pretty sure in medieval times there were knights in full, heavy armour, that would carry both a sword and shield. Perhaps there could be some kind of movement/calorie modifier to compensate.
Love the artwork and the idea. Well done.

This story was posted on Reddit where i also posted my barrel shield idea, there is a picture at the end, that's pretty solid proof people can carry barrel shields. I even changed the name of the shield to the Pinhero Shield.
"A little story for you guys and real-life pictures of how people actually tried to use barrels as shields. (if you don't care about the story jump to the link in the end)
A couple of years ago, in the city where I grew up in Brazil, there was this poor neighbourhood that was built in an "invaded" land. It was there for 10+ years. It was a very nice place, though very poor. Children playing around etc. I visited there when they started having trouble with the law to see how we could help.
The owner of the land was trying to get it back (though he owed the city way more than it was worth in taxes because he never bothered paying them), and the police was threatening to invade.
It was all very sad because the federal government tried to intervene and buy the land, but the state government (opposition, allied to the city mayor) ordered the police to invade because they didn't want to let the federal government solve a problem they couldn't for a decade.
People organized to defend their homes and posed with "barrel shields" and motorcycle helmets. In the end, they didn't really resist the police. It was a enormous and well equipped force. Very violent, also. They burned the houses to force people out. I was part of a group that tried to help blocking the roads, we delayed the police a little bit (they were coming in several buses) setting tires on fire (interesting idea to block roads once Rust has vehicles, eh?) but it was no use.
Needless to say they razed all the houses to the ground and the place is empty to this day.

a) Those are plastic barrels. Effective only against rubber bullets (used by Brazilian police in such cases;
b) Their idea was to confront physically the troop who would be using riot guns, and
baton nightstick
c) Even IF you turn it into metal, two things would occur: i- it would be ineffective against bullet if thin or too heavy if thick; ii- you would lose aim and stability when firing a PISTOL (it would be impossible to use a rifle, and any other 2 handed firearm.
If you research a little, you'll see that even in Counter Strike, the use of a shield is limited to a pistol, since the shield is very heavy.
In real life you wouldn't be able to run with it. And in the case of rust, it would be ridiculous to see a naked take a giantesc riot shield from his ass and run towards you...
As for "Riot Shields", they are effective only against melee, and even in that case it can withstand a certain amount of bashing, but maybe ineffective against piercing weapons .

Using "Realism" as a counter for your argument is pointless we dont need to talk about the unrealistic amount of weight we can carry. We are already wearing metal armor that looks to be nearly an inch thick. Ned Kelly wore very similar armor. Look at the latest Concept armor, the one with the bones all over it, no one ever wore anything like that and it wouldn't do much against any form of attack except blunt objects and fists.
Look at the Roman shield, the Scutum, that was originally TEN kilograms in weight, large rectangle curved shield made from three sheets of wood glued together and covered with canvas and leather, usually with a spindle shaped boss along the vertical length of the shield, but it was effective when utilized correctly. A 55 gallon metal drum could weight up to 21 kilos which is nothing compared to the amount of trees, stone, sulphur, and ore we carry at any one time. The lids themselves would possibly be a kilo each, or the two halves as designed in the first barrel concept would be about 9 each.
Shields would be effective against melee weapons, easily, not so much against guns obviously but for a short moment they would be, maybe if we covered them with kevlar they'd stand a chance. Tactics could be created to use shields in battle if the leader is creative and intelligent.
Shields should get a spot in clothing/armor slots if they ever make it into the game so it's always equipped in your hands if you decide to roll with a pistol or smth like that. Like in old cs 1.6. Just my personal opinion tho'. Nice concept man. It's just a thin barrel metal guys, even 9mm can penetrate it, bullets should deal less dmg after they hit the shields made out of smth like that.

It's not meant to be based on realism, as some seem to be taking it, just a fun Rust type concept that could work.
This is the other one i did.

Well, this second concept seems more reasonable than the plastic shield you shown.
Anyway I think if implemented it shouldn't be 100% effective against bullets, specially in the case of 5.56 bullets, let's say a 50% less damage for 5.56, 75% against pistol bullets.
BUT, the biggest point is that the player shouldn't be able to RUN with those monster in hands. And the specially the AIM should lose accuracy to counterweight the extra protection.
You argued with "roman shields", so common, let's use the good sense. If you are going to give the player so big protection you should lessen his velocity. Or the nakeds will never have a chance.
So IF that is applied (less aim and less velocity) then it could be a good idea.
Furthermore I think that this would be much used to raid bases. So, to counterweight it too, barricades with holes for firing should be implemented also (like wood barricades in legacy, but with holes for firing) and with the same protection as the "barrel shield" also.
