You may have noticed that when you launch the game it no longer asks you if you want to play the new version or the old version. They’re no longer installed side-by-side. The good news is that if you really only want to play the old version, you can so do by switching to the Legacy branch in Steam’s properties.
Right click on Rust in Steam to opt in to Legacy. It will download and then run Legacy.
Trust me, don't waste your time and energy on Legacy.
I wanted to show it to a friend last weekend, and we let after about 10 minutes. Half the servers are filled with hackers, and nobody gives a f***. But it's fine, we let the kiddies play on these servers, it's just a waste of time for regular players :)

There are still a few well populated Legacy servers out there, and they seem to have good admin coverage, as well as a decent array of anti-cheat mods.
First thing to do if you join one of these servers is to find out from others what the admin/hacking situation is like. If it seems fishy, try another.
And definitely steer clear of any vanilla servers. Playing on those will be an exercise in frustration management.
Best of luck and have fun!
