• Melee Viability + gunfire prot >Riot Shield

When getting fired upon in Rust, you have little time to react. Especially if assailant is not first spotted. As of right now, players run in a zig-zag fashion or if geared and with iron balls, will attempt to shoot the threat first while chancing bullets in the face. Shoot first or be shot. This game is too offensive and could benefit from some defensive options, I believe. When I suddenly hear that bullet whiz by my head, I want my first reaction to be to duck and raise my shield while I either look for the shooter or make my way to cover. Not run like a vagina for 5 minutes hoping he is not chasing me or still has eyes on me. Cover is not always available, that is why I think Riot Shields, in different tiers, should be implemented. One could argue that you can use barricades for this, but then you are a sitting target with, most likely, a lot less cover than your opponent and will eventually make your mad dash for safety. Also, there is no building aloud in rad towns. Riot Shields should come in Wood, metal and armored tiers with increasing durability, with wood tier being available from the start and the rest as BP's. One should not be able to hide behind the shield indefinitely and would only use to deflect bullets or melee swings from torso and half of lower section until durability is diminished through use under gunfire. This coverage should increase if you crouch. Using shield should act like aiming a gun, slowing movement and not allowing other actions. This would increase melee viability and even pistol viability late game. When shield is not in use, it can sit on one's back, acting as armor for torso area. Less stressing about what is behind you and will encourage better aiming from snipers. As an added bonus, you can pull out a spear and run at people yelling, "THIS IS SPARTA BITCH" and stab them in the ear. I found two other threads similar to this and figured that the more that Facepunch hears of this, the more they will see people interested in this concept. I'm not even sure this is something that the Rust community would like to have, but it sounds cool to me. Let me know what you think. -Peregrine
Not a horrible idea, I suppose. But isn't that basically what armor is for? A shield you're always wearing?
Only if cost a lot of resources (1k wood, 500 metal frags, etc..) and it broke quickly. The whole point of getting the advantage is too get the good shots on, if you throw in a riot shield it will be quickly be abused by large groups to completely protect eachother. Bad idea in my opinion. Maybe shields for like a sword+shield.

Having someone cover you while you stand and shoot them? I think it would create tactical formations instead of everyone strafing around or peeking over rock ledges.

Alright idea however the shield should not be allowed to just sit on someones back because it will just make succesfully running away all the more easier. I feel that the shield should have to be carried around instead of being stored in the inventory, it being a requirement to drop it to use another item. I do however agree with the tiers. Wood tier: Block projectiles such as arrows, spears and handmade shells (each more damaging than the last) Metal tier: Block projectiles such as arrows, spears and handmade shells as well as pistol bullets and buckshot Armoured tier: Block projectiles such as arrows, spears, handmade shells, pistol bullets, buckshot as well as slug and 5.56 rifle rounds Incendiary rounds should set the Wooden shield on fire and deal damage to the user. Close range shotgun blasts should be able to deal small amount of blunt damage to Metal and Armoured. Explosive rounds should be able to deal small amount of blunt damage to Metal and Armoured. Slugs should have a varying % chance of penetrating Metal shields depending on the distance. High velocity rounds for respective firearms should have a small % chance of penetrating Metal and Armoured shields (maybe 1-5% chance) when they are somewhat damaged, progressively having a higher chance of damaging as shield deteriorates. Metal and Armoured shields should be able to ricochet a fair amount of the bullets fired at it (ofc the bullets will most likely be ricocheted to the extremes but would still be a nice touch) Pistols and spears should be able to be used however they will expose the user slightly and if the pistol ironsights are used it greatly exposes the user. I think there should also be a smaller shield for use in melee with different weapons doing more damage to the shield and the two-handed morningstar should be able to penerate the shield and deal a small amount of damage. The shield could be made out of road signs like the road sign armour.

I think this can be very useful. I like Tim's idea on different tiers and the different ammo effects. The one with the shield can crouch to block the bullets, but to aim with his one handed gun or melee weapon his head and feet shows. His back is always open. Add that with the different types of shields, ammo, and situations, it would add a lot of fun gameplay into Rust. I see explosive weapons being more useful as well. Incendary rounds for wood. I think grenades need more area of effect spread, but that can be done too. I wonder why we don't have Molotov cocktails yet either. :why:

Also while reloading, you shouldn't be able to block for that time period leaving you vulnerable.
More improvised armor and cooking pot helmet plz, it seems like people like a barrel for higher tier shield...heres a great concept submitted already too.

See Facepunch we are doing all the thinking for you haha, just put it in for us XD
