• Frustration - New Player Vent

Ok, I ported to this game from H1Z1 and I like it so much more! However, I am pretty frustrated (not going to quit, just want to make my voice heard). I got this game about 6 days ago. I have already put 40+ hours into it. If you doubt this claim, please check my steam profile (same name as on forum). Me and the group I play with worked hard, after hearing there would be no blue print wipe. We stayed on late last night and the day before making sure we got numerous BPs (especially weapon and armor). Again having being told that BPs would NOT be wiped. However, we learned this morning that they would be wiped, due to the influx of new players. My entire group is composed of new players... we understand this is a survival game and it will not and SHOULD not be easy. We worked VERY hard to try to match with the better players on our server. We made friends and enemies. We involved ourselves in the game and became a part of a community, as ALL new players should. I understand the decision to try to even things out for new players. I get that it is a business decision. However, on a game that is designed to be hard (it is called survival for a reason) I do not think that a game should alleviate this burden on new players. New players, knowing that this is a survival game, should do their utmost to incorporate themselves into the game, and work hard. Now because of the "new player" reasoning, those of us who are new and worked hard to become better are being punished, as are all veteran players. Yes, this is unintentional, but I also believe completely unnecessary. Anyway, that is my vent. Thank you for listening! I look forward to seeing how this game continues to develop.
I play with Plumber, my first day playing Rust was 1/1/16. In my 5 days of playing (I am a father and a husband, so I have RL duties to attend to), I was able to (with the help of our group) learn all but 5 of the Library level blueprints, and many of the lower level blueprints. We worked our butt off Tuesday and Wednesday night because Garry said there would be no BP wipe. Facepunch, everyone you make it clear that Rust is in Early Access so that you can get feedback from the players and make changes based on their input. It was tough this last weekend, being up against others who had all the weapons and armors, but we prevailed and built up our group to get ready for the wipe. Facepunch, if you really care about developing for the players, then pay attention to the players, actually get their input and listen. I came from H1Z1, Dayz before that, and tried Ark. Rust is by the far the most entertaining, and the hardest. I love the struggle in Rust. Please do not bow to the carebears and try and make it easy. I love the monthly reset, the most fun I had in H1Z1 was after a server wipe, but having something that continues on to make your time playing feel productive and worthwhile is a huge pro.
sometimes it just happends, get over it lololol
40hrs, 1 week, 1 server? You have only scratched the surface.
Wipes are good for the community and good for the player. With every new beginning I become a more efficient newman. Barrels fear my very name! 1200+ hours here btw.
I am not saying wipes are a bad thing. I am encouraged to hear that they happen often. However, first saying there would be no wipe, then changing one's mind the day of the wipe is very frustrating. Again, I am LOVING rust. As it is in Alpha and as a new player, I am trying to provide feedback, in a positive fashion.
Plz bro i bought this game 2 weeks ago i got 190 hours logged .... be happy like i am that you get a chance to compete with the other people who have been playing longer starting at 0
You are missing my point, but thank you for your comment.
Its alpha .. you should expect the game to wipe completely alot ....
Again, thank you for your comments, please read my posts in their entirety.
Are you upset because of the wipe, or because it stated somewhere that there wasn't going to be? Regardless, it isn't a punishment from the developers or anything like that. Like you surely know, this game is in Alpha, and at times it will be necessary to lay down a clean slate for all players, and much to the dismay of many, this update was deemed to be one of them by the devs. I'm sure many players share your sentiment of frustration, but I don't think that even with the reduced time you have alotted with other commitments, that it will be anything other than a minor setback.

I like wipes and I think wipes are good. It was poor communication that caused us to play differently. That is my primary frustration. Again, overall, not mad at the game. I am loving it. Just poor the communication that cause me and my friends to waste our time as we strove to match the players on the server. I know that we can bounce back, and we will work just as hard in the future, that is not my concern. Another concern is that they may be pandering to the crowd who wants to make this game easier and more "friendly". This has destroyed h1z1, which was promising.

This has destroyed H1Z1, which was promising.
That's an interesting point that I hadn't considered. I too very much enjoy the challenge and danger that Rust constantly places the player in, I would hate to see it go away just to create a slightly larger player base. I don't know if there's really an open channel to communicate with the devs, but I think that this would be a worthwhile concern to bring to their attention.
BP wipes are rarely forced by the devs, and when they are it is because of overhauls to the BP system. In your case i would say that the server owner decided to have a fresh start, which is well within their rights even if it can be frustrating to see your work go down the drain. just remember that all those players with more time and effort on that server just had the same thing happen; now you are all on "even" footing, so get in there and compete. the two questions that niggle me are, where did you hear garry say there wouldn't be one, and was it an official server?
So that's.. 13,6 hours a day? On average? Damn son.
Winter holiday free time + working from home.. im enjoying myself
Where did Garry say that?
this .. this all day...
Players on every server were constantly saying there was no wipe, but I think they wanted to just sell BP for sulfur+blow everything up. :v:
Garry only pushed the BP wipe to the main branch 5 hours before the reset. Rustupdates is a bot that scrapes commit messages from a git-style repository. Until Garry pushed that, nobody knew it was a BP wipe. I don't know if this BP wipe was because they got smoke rockets done, or something else, or they wanted to make it "more fair" but I'm ambivalent on the fairness thing. I've been playing a little over a week but I had all the tasty stuff unlocked, C4, Rocket launchers, all the walls, bunch of guns. Part of the reason why I appreciate Rust is because even though it IS so rough, you can still compete on day 1. BP wipe does make it easier for casuals, and screw the hardcore players in a game like Rust. They'll do fine for themselves no matter what you do.
We are on an official server. You know, I cannot recall where I saw it. Very possibly could have been mislead. However, my point still stands about the poor communication, and potential softening of the game. This post was simply to express the frustrations and concerns of a new player. I appreciate those of you who have actually read my posts and responded in a positive and friendly manner. I look forward to killing you all in the future!
I look forward to killing you all in the future!
aww, same here:)
It's upset a few people actually, but it's just one of those things, just put it down to experience that this game can and will surprise you! I remember I took a couple of days off to extend my weekend, and all the servers were ddos'ed! At the end of the day, look at the positives, you are more familiar with the game, map and rad town layout so you will be more efficient this time. Can I suggest though to stay away from official servers. As far as I'm aware, they still attract hackers and can do down for days at a time.

And here is what he is talking about: He initially said no BP wipe, then the day of the update he said there would be. It was a little frustrating for those of us who did a bunch of grind the night before or day of. There didn't appear to be any code-based reason for it. People say maybe it was to let new players have a fresh start, which means it could have been decided and communicated before the day of (if that was the reasoning).

In their devblog they said New year, fresh start for everyone. So the reasoning they give they should have known ahead of time. As very new players, we would have prepared differently and learned the map more for better positioning. We are quite a competitive group, who likes to PVP and develop rivals, we are way behind in just knowing the game, and we figured the best start would be to get as many BPs as possible, like all the guns, knowing it was a BP we would have prepared differently. Our feedback is to help these indie devs treat the player base differently. Our group is coming from H1Z1 where the devs have consistently ignored the player base which is why people are leaving. I don't want people to leave Rust.
Coming in after wipe, my thoughts are this. The wipe did more to hurt new players then veteran players. Our base has already been blown up by C4, we have already been attacked by players with Thompsons, AK's and Bolties. Had the server NOT been wiped, we could have fought back. All we have (HAD) now are bows and crossbows... slaughter. Granted, I did get an awesome kill when I threw my rock and got a head shot. I think we may move away from an official server, since the devs are not very active on their own servers.

What's wrong with you people! He's right! Garry, you're too caught up in developing the game to see the people it affects! Stop it guys! This guy grinded really really hard, and you went back on your word. How could you be so insensitive at a time like this??? I'm putting my foot down. This is the line in the sand for everyone out there who clicked on a rock or a tree literally hundreds of times! Stop taking things that he takes seriously less seriously because it hurts people. This game needs to stop developing for the good of honest hard working people like StryfeKhaos, and indeed Plumbersmack. Thank you for your time, -a concerned guy on concerning matters.

He could have said 'I don't know.' Instead, he said there'd be no wipe and way after he knew there would be, he finally announced it. Your hyperbole doesn't make up for the fact that it was pretty piss poor execution of communication. Did I die? No. Am I super salty? No. I think the twitter exchange is funny, and is quintessential Garry.
