For anyone running on Intel HD 3000 IGP, or other low end GPUs

Hi guys,
We received some reports of people not being able to run the game on integrated Intel HD 3000 GPUs. I've compiled some info to hopefully start a feedback loop to sort this out.
I was able to run the latest stable and development Rust builds on a MacbookAir 2011, but only in D3D9 mode. In D3D11 it is simply not possible because the Intel HD 3000 driver is crashing when compiling perfectly valid shaders and there's pretty much nothing we can do about it. Only the intel driver team can fix that, and they don't seem to be accepting HD 3000 bug reports anymore.
I ran my successful tests under Windows 10 64bit and Bootcamp 6 drivers, running Rust in Direct3D 9 mode. In this environment, I get a reported 800+ MB of video ram. This is really important for the game to be able to run properly. Make sure your video ram (shared with system ram) is as highest as possible. You might be able to increase it in the BIOS.
Please try the following steps to run the game:
1) Force D3D9 by adding the "-force-d3d9" command to the launch options:

2) Set a low resolution (e.g. 800x600), enable Windowed mode and set Graphics quality to "Fastest"

3) After the game launches (before joining a server), make sure your PERFORMANCE and GRAPHICS settings look like this. Just to be sure, please tweak PERFORMANCE first and GRAPHICS second:

Note that these ultra low settings are just to get you started and make sure the game loads! You'll be able to raise the settings, after a successful play session, until you are happy and the game still runs well.
If anyone - who's having problems running on low end GPUs - could give the latest build a try (following all the notes above) and let me know if it works, that would be highly appreciated.
Hope this helps and thank you for your patience.
Diogo
Oh god, 800x600 with those settings. I am so sorry.
Here's the best advice for running intergrated graphics: Don't use intergrated graphics.

you say that like hes been given a choice use that one or a high end one
not quite as simple as 'get a better one lol'
You guys realize this the the dev posting? He's intentionally playing on a laptop he borrowed to try and help people with low end machines.
Nice feedback for him.
I'm running a late 2009 iMac with OS X with a ATI radeon HD 4850 512 MB graphics card. 4 GB of RAM.
I haven't been able to play on any procedural map server for a couple months due to poor frame rate (4FPS). I can play on the non-procedure maps though since I get 21 FPS running a little better than "fastest" settings.
I tried your tricks here and it got a little better on the procedural map (went from 4 -> 7 FPS) but it's still not playable.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for looking at this.
I had a Macbook Pro, i5, GTX330m, 8 gb ram. Before the helicopter release I could play @30FPS At the time I was able to open Rust without specifying DX9. No I have everything turned down and here are the results:
Basically
Start in dx9 mode= Constant stuttering
Start in dx11 mode with dx 10.1 features= D3D shader create error for shader [0x887a0005] ps_4_0 in log file then crash.
Start in Opengl mode=No stuttering or crash but 4-8 fps
I am running a Dell XPS 13 with an i5-5200U Dual Core CPU Hyperthreading enabled, 8GB of RAM, and Intel HD Graphics 5500. The RAM is only shared; there is no dedicated V-RAM. I tested the following on the 19th of November, 2015.
Using exactly what you prescribed, I was able to achieve around 37-42 FPS on an empty server on the beach. In the forest, I had pretty constant 27-30 FPS. (http://i.imgur.com/FSNDCa0.jpg)
I also tested it on the development branch, just in case, on the same server. However, results were too close to tell.
In both cases, there were certain textures that appeared more detailed than others. The world was just one colour, but things like water and rocks and logs were quite detailed. Particle effects are still shown when walking on the beach, which probably decreased performance. Grass is still the devil. Loading times for both starting the game and joining servers seemed extremely lengthy, probably resulting from poor CPU speeds.
I hope this is helps ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
With the settings given it didn't do much, the resolution did all the work increasing my fps maximum to about 25. People say I shouldn't have problems playing this game but the graphics are just too beautiful for my pc to handle. Here are my specs RAM 8GB, processor intel core i5, 3.4GHz but my graphics cards sucks a bit tho... Nvidia GeForce GT630 . I was able to run the game at 30+ fps back in the days when grass was able to remove completely, but then there was this update that ruined the world for me XD. Since then I've been getting 10-15 less fps around grassy areas/forests (99% of every map) except beaches where it's about 30FPS max. And since then there was this bug that's really annoying. http://prntscr.com/950tr4 (Before), and few seconds after the graphics load, http://prntscr.com/950w88 .
I might not be the only one but grass is my main problem, it has been through out the whole game, even from the first rust. Potato-alike computers can't handle the details that were put into that evil little devil creature (grass), which is why we can barely run the game. I am collecting money month by month to buy graphics card stronger than I got but then it would be just for Rust cause I don't play any other "new" games should I say, cause I know I will get like 10fps probably.
So please, for the love of Jesus, make the grass disableable so we can enjoy lives once again. The potatoes want to play this beautiful game again. Personally I am not playing Rust just because I have FPS issues, but I REALLY want to play it, I am in love with this game.
Thank you for reading this long ass essay. :D
Intel hd graphics have FPS I will perfect 30-35 , the problem is stuttering every 5 seconds
it is a laptop, while I have not spent this problem before me

stuttering is due to the recent rust update, nothing to do with your PC

Not everybody can borrow their mommy's credit card and go out and buy a new graphics card on a whim. Some of us work for a living.
The issue here is that the game was actually running decently on integrated cards as recently as 5-6 months ago, but has become exponentially more processor-heavy and unoptimized since then.

And what would be the solution? I took months without playing rust ...

I'm not saying to get a new GPU I'm saying to be patient
what do you do when you only got 2gb ram like my algerian friend? :D

enjoy playing solitare on his windows 95 machine

You send him money so he can buy some more ram or else you aren't a good friend q_q
let's keep this on track guys.
dio, any worth in me trying this on my intel hd 4000 and feeding back results? easy enough to disable my nvidia card:)

the thread is a how-to-guide for low spec rigs while they try and figure how to get it to work on integrated graphics again; most of this shit while funny is pretty off topic. figure the replies should mostly be "i did this and x happened" rather than *insert shitty joke about my algerian friend's lack of ram*. if he has 2gb then he should get more ram, or throw away his dreams of playing rust on his toaster.
Enjoy the graphics :quotes:

I will don't worry:zing:
The graphics are just awful but at least I can see my house.

There is a fairly old article: https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/how-to-plan-optimizations-with-unity
The author found higher performance using batching, lower LOD, lower model complexity, lower layer cull distances, and lower shadow quality.
In the article, the author used an Intel Graphics Performance Analyzer (https://software.intel.com/en-us/gpa) to analyze the GPU draw call times.
Just my 2¢.
Hi guys,
I am having a lot of issues running the game with pretty much the same specs (HP Pavillion g6 laptop with Intel HD 3000 and shit all going for it), and ive used the settings given above in the newest update and it's still crashing when entering a server. Please help?
ps I've done all the standard fixes, updating drivers, running in DX9, fragged my hard drive, virus checked, ran a command scan for missing/corrupt DLLs, but nothing, i'm starting to think its deffo my hardware, any pointers?
[editline]16th January 2016[/editline]
FIXED
anybody needing help with a similar issue give me a shout,
but basically:
Turn Intel HD settings all to performance for better speeds
Defrag Hard Disk
Run task manager and end any unneeded tasks
Run Rust on lowest settings possible with details in link below:

Hold your head in shame as you realise you should've bought a new laptop/PC ages ago
wanna play Rust on a laptop, my advice, get an EGPU.
It's a external PCIE card that connects to expressport or to internal minipcie, and it allowes you to connect a normal GPU to a laptop.
Doesn't look pretty.. even has some bandwidth issues if you don't do your research, but with a little preperation, you can turn your crappy laptop into a decent gamingrig (that no gaminglaptop with internal GPU can beat)
Total costs ~100 dollar.
