This is an idea for a server a friend and I have been working on. We've played on various slow play, realistic servers, and kind of put our own ideas together within what's possible right now.
Our setup: No crafting at all when you first spawn (not even default craft options). You start completely unable to make anything. It has an economy system so you can buy a few items you think you need, but all blueprints are looted or earned through killing animals (%). Rare. You can't even build a shelter, but since there is an economy plugin, you can buy it until you learn it. You earn money through killing animals and selling back items you loot from boxes or animal drops. You CAN sell back spare blueprints but since they are a pain in the butt, you can also use them to trade with others for their spare blueprints.
No modern weapons can be crafted ( we didn't realize the revolver was a modern weapon, it is craftable). No airdrops. No explosives.
Does that means it's impossible to raid? No, to keep with the theme, you can use Handmade Lockpicks to open doors. However, the % of them working is extremely low and you cannot craft a Lockpick. This means you have to find them or loot them, or kill for them. Simply put the lockpick on your belt and walk up to a door like you normally would and click the "Open". If it works the door will open (you lose lockpick), if it doesn't, nothing happens (and you still lose lockpick). Yes, you get 1 try only. So it's possible to be raided, but only if you've traded well for lockpicks or you stockpile them over time. Otherwise, focus on developing your own build and saving money for rare items. *Update: So far most of us have been raided. Why? Because it's hard to find blueprints for an actual building and a metal door. If you are being a prick, no-one trades with you so you won't get anything quick. If you are doing it on your own, you have to be very lucky to get a good combination of blueprints through animals and looting. Most of us find ourselves looking for discreet spots for our shelters while we gather blueprints, tools, and resources. I your shelter has been found, like with all rust servers, your stuff is vulnerable. Plus, the first place built with a metal door, was raided with lockpicks fairly quick. It's going to happen regardless, but because of the lockpicks randomness, it's not a certain easy raid. In my opinion, that's how c4 should be anyway, a bit more random. Sometimes one, sometimes 8. Nothing should be end game, but the exactly 2 c4 per door idea takes out all uncertainty in raiding. How many doors and walls can I get through with my 8 c4. Rather than, "will I be able to get through this wall with 8 c4?" Game changer. Doesn't make it unraidable, makes it harder to be exact.
There is an arrow retrieval system so you can get back your undamaged arrows. This makes shooting arrows a bit more realistic, as well as helps prolong the need to create new arrows each time you shoot one. However if you miss, you lose that arrow. Arrows are also craftable.
You can also learn to craft handmade weapons but first you will have to go through the tedious task of looting to actually get a blueprint or the item itself. Again, rare.
Ammo is uncraftable. Weapon or not, once you are out of bullets, you will have to go back to gathering and using a bow.
Other than ammo, explosives, research kits, and blueprints, everything else can be purchased. Metal building parts, wood building parts, modern weapons, tools, bandages. Everything is overpriced, but if totally desperate and you've worked hard enough to collect money, it's possible to spend money on a basic item (unable to research anything bought). However, modern weapons have insanely high prices (because they are no longer made or available in world, the high prices are realistic). The catch? Durability is turned on and the more you use this insanely high priced weapon, the more you've just wasted $125,000 - $250,000. Plus all ammo will have to be found.
Decay is turned down so things don't disappear as quickly. This may cause lag on crowded servers but I don't think this style of play will ever be that popular.
Killing On Sight is frowned upon. Killing happens, wars happen, two guys fighting in a rad town happen, but walking up to fresh spawns/naked or some guy gathering and shooting him is reason enough for that player to "press charges". Does that mean admin will jail you for seeing killing? Nope, only if the player killed "presses charges." You killed him naked or while he was gathering and got to enjoy your moment. Now he can send you to jail and enjoy his. If that idea sucks to you and you just feel the need to kill at will, this server is absolutely not for you. By default the jail time is set to 1 hour. If you like the server and have the urge to kill, then just know you will have to be in world for an hour, in jail, muted. Can't escape, can't type, can't suicide. If you sign off, timer stops. Your criminal record displays via /ranking killers. If you are on that list and you argue that you didn't KOS, it won't matter, your record speaks for itself. Play accordingly.
The jail is raidable (if you can find it). Inside the jail is modern weapons and ammo if you are slick enough to get to them. If no KOS, why need modern weapons? Defend yourself, possible clan/tribe wars, and just to know you have a weapon no-one else can get. However, durability is turned on so they get old the more they are used.
Take the [brackets] [] {} () out of your name or you will not be able to research any blueprints. The database does not like brackets.
Vote on server wipe unless an update happens then it will wipe itself.
Anyone interested in this type of game play or have other ideas of things that could be implemented (and it's possible as of now)?
Things we didn't do that we know would make things harder/longer but feel it would hurt game play:
Change crafting time. Possible but I hate crafting time as is and I do not think longer crafting times makes it more survival or harder. It just makes it boring.
Change resources to spawn less frequently. I love seeing new piles of wood and rock spawn, and I did not want this to change no matter what. Working the fields and gathering is fun for me, so the last thing I wanted is empty fields (I can get that in the crowded official servers).
To save more PMs, the f1 net.connect IP was added below:
f1
net.connect 173.234.141.90:28015
sounds ok would make people play for alot longer the usuual
Maybe, we'll see. It's just an experiment.
I know there are mods that already add the economy aspect but I really do like the idea of starting without knowing how to build anything aside from very basic tools.
I enjoy the PvE aspect so I think this is aimed more towards that type of game play.
A friend and I are already running a server with most of these ideas implemented and working, but still trying to figure out the proper prices for killing animals/buying modern weapons.

will you post the ip of server
I posted in the sub forum - Rust Servers section. Although the ideas are still not completely finished. If you have any ideas (possible), please share.
No blueprints at all.

what
Sorry, no crafting the default items until you find blueprints through killing animals or looting boxes. I was rambling.
Could you toss me a PM with the server info?
.
Sent PMs to both. I didn't realize I had my PMs off. (to keep from annoying others: f1 net.connect 173.234.141.90:28015)
Another idea we had was changing the "recipe" for the crafted items. A plugin creator said it is possible, but not possible to change the UI. Which means you would see one "recipe" and have to type in chat to find the modded recipe. I like the idea of making recipes a bit harder, but not without the UI change with it. So it's not something that was added.
Even finding something as simple as a Camp Fire blueprint becomes a relief.
Without campfires you would starve. And I don't get if this server is so "hardcore" why is there an economy? People were able to put 3 walls and a roof together long before people created civilizations and worked together.
There were servers that did this. They used this setup...

While not as hardcore....it's pretty damn hardcore. And they all died because of lack of pop. I thought of making a server like this myself but from what I understand you're lucky to get 10-15 active users.

There is an economy. If smart, you can spend wisely and always have money for food, kill for food, or buy a campfire until you find a blueprint. It's not easy, but very possible. You start with an arrow blueprint and a stone hatchet blueprint when you join the server. Both for a reason. If you play, you will see.
*edit. I said you can't make arrows but you can. It's why we give this blueprint. I meant you can't make a bow until you find a blueprint, but there is always a way to buy if you have the income.

I'm beginning to believe you're making it hard just to be hard, not to make any sense. If I want a hardcore server it should make sense to some aspect. By the sounds of this you're just doing anything you can to make it more difficult even if it doesn't make any sense at all.
I'm guessing next you'll tell me to make C4 I need to put 5000 chicken in it so I have to make the choice of starvation in order to raid...
I like it. I like a challenge. However, I'm wedded to my current server and wouldn't switch unless you had a high population and there was a wipe on official servers. Great ideas though.

Yea, that loot table is not like ours, however it's still semi-hardcore. Since we've removed blueprints, it goes well beyond loot tables. I understand the hardcore idea may not be for everyone, but it's what I enjoy. Maybe someone else does too. Even 1 extra player can make a server a bit more exciting.

It very much makes sense for those of us who do not want to play for few hours and be done with a base and server or be overran by a clan that is c4ed up, modern guns, and killing you on sight. It's called hardcore (more for the pve), but for me it's funcore. It's not hard just to be hard, it's fun just to be fun. I enjoy it. :)
Try it out sometime and see for yourself.
I'd really love to play like this, but since it's hosted in America, my ping is about 150. Not really acceptable by my standards :/
I think just a few people showing interest is awesome. I used the term hardcore so it was relatable but for me it's just fun. It is far from impossible, far from dying (I haven't died), and far from being some weird extremely complicated game. It just forces the focus on surviving and taking care of yourself, rather than loading up weapons to raid.
It's not for everyone.
Very interesting. Friend of mine and myself were talking about some of these exact same things a few days ago (better use for lock picks, no c4, no modern weapons). It is hard going on a server and getting shot within minutes from someone with a bolt action or M4. Yet at the opposite end going on a low pop server with no pvp or no item loss on death type of stuff the game becomes too easy. We shall be on later to check your server out. :D
Even though default craft items show in UI, nothing is craftable until you find a blueprint. The store helps.
The admins are really good and fair so far, worths a try if you have never tried hardcore. The game gets really boring after over 250 hours, but this idea brings a whole new dynamic which is great and not easy. Confession, got scared from wolfs couple of times.
Survival is hardcore, Rust should be hardcore.
I'm going to try this server, if my ping is acceptable (I kinda hope so).
Edit: I can't even craft a hunting bow, lol. I really love it.
Looks interesting i'll check it out tonight!
Hank, we worked with the resources we had available, so it's still a bit clunky. Certain UI can't be changed. If all is working well when you started you should have received a arrow blueprint (for a reason) and a stone hatchet blueprint. You also received $1000 starter cash in the econ. With the $1000 you can buy a shelter, a wooden door, or whatever you'd like ( /buy ).
Just fyi, the bow costs about........ a $1000. lol.
Nice idea, keep working on the balance I might join and have a look...
As for food... without a campfire it makes the lootable food much more valuable... also make sure to make paper a good source of income as it is useless in game, purhaps change the drop chance of it and make it a very valuable source oc income and take away the income from killing animals as in a large group farming animals becomes very easy with one kiteing them and 3 or 4 peeps with hatchets
I joined.. could not research those two blueprints for some reason. Not sure why.

You caused so much unneeded bloodshed, poor smugle and his friend :P
Anyone learn wood doorways / ceiling yet?
On a side note, the server is fun and has a good smaller community, which will hopefully grow in time :)

Also when you start, you can kill pigs, chickens, and rabits easily with a stone hatchet for 100$ a pop.
Once you get a bow and some arrows its easy to mop up some bears & wolves to make some money / get blue prints.
When was this last wiped?
If i joined would i just get wiped over and over because it'll take me a while to get a place to sleep safely?
