Sorry, I'm completely new to Gmod. I installed it (Version9), the intro menu loaded up and I clicked 'start new game', but nothing happened.
I'm probably missing something obvious but I'd appreciate it if anyone could point me in the right direction

Get Gmod 10. It's 8 euro on Steam. You can buy a CS:S + GMod package for 19 Euro.
