• Would like to know how one goes about stopping DoS/DDoS "attacks" on a rented game server.

I'm going to keep this short and simple so as not to waste anybody's time, I also hope this is in the right section. I think everyone can agree with me that these sorts of "attacks" on servers happen way too much in garrysmod and generally it's because an admin on your team bans the wrong mingebag who knows how to do it and I'm hoping more people than myself can benefit from knowing this- current and future server owners, or friends of them, mainly. I don't have a box. I don't own a VPN or anything fancy. It's just a quaint game server paid month-to-month and it's managed over a control panel on the host's website. I do have direct FTP access however. I don't know much about attacks like DoS/DDoS attacks but from what it seems like, it can be stopped simply by blacklisting/blocking the IPs or something. I don't know how to do this and am hoping someone can tell me how, and if it's wrong, well, I'd like to know the correct method, of course- -as my server has been "under attack" for the past 10 minutes or so because some kid with a myg0t tag got himself banned. This makes the server look bad because, at the time, it was three slots shy of being full, and was for about an hour previous to now, and it's only two days old and I (and the team) are deadset on making this work and making a name for ourselves in the field we're in. While I can convince most of the players that it won't happen again, I'm sure a good driving factor in my side of the playing field would be that I'm able to stop these nuisances. So, despite all other discussion, and for those who don't want to read all that... basically, I have a rented game server, I can access the FTP directly, but don't know how I go about stopping DoS/DDoS attacks.
You can't. If you pissed some skiddies off best way is to close the server and wait for a while, if they continue you either need a dos proof host(really rare and expensive) or you need to change your community name. Its quite sad but thats it, there is no magical anti ddos system.
There is no real way to stop DDoS attacks. The best thing I can suggest to you is -not- to quit, because unless you have a moderately large community, (I.e Gangwars, PE), or they are not avaster, they will eventually get bored of ddosing you. Also, you might try having your server host switch you to a different box.
Well, luckily, he did get bored of it and gave up. So I hope he doesn't bother doing it again. Thanks for the replies though, I'll take this into consideration.
