Ill be playing gmod for 1 or 2 hours and the screen will turn black... then it will proceed to display my desktop screen. I can still hear the sounds from the game and when i click i can still do stuff.. i just cant see anything except my desktop screen. I try to press the windows key and ''reopen'' the gmod window but it doesnt do anything forcing me to close it in task manager. This has only happend every i started using windows 7 and gmod is the only game ive noticed that does this. (Battlefield 3 never does this) Someone said it may be my graphics card driver crashing but i updated to the most recent driver!
Try closing any other programs you have running that's not a necessity and when the problem happens try to press ALT+TAB then TAB as many times as needed to select Garrysmod. If that does not work try running garrysmod in windowed mode.
When the screen turns black, then back on the desktop does it say "The screen drivers crashed and has been regained" or something similar? If so, you need to update your screen drivers. That's the fix for it, I believe. I had this issue on an old computer that I tested for GMod the other day and it kept blackscreening like that. Updating the video drivers, which was the thing crashing and it worked.

no it does not say anything when it happens
You sure? anyways, try updating the video drivers. Usually fixes these type of problems.
