• Linux dedicated server setup - New tutorial
    5 replies, posted
Hello everybody! I've just been busy writing a new tutorial for setting up a Garry's Mod server on Linux. It's sort of a re-write of the tutorial on the original wiki, but it contains some more features and I plan to put more help into it. I'd appreciate feedback on errors, problems, mistakes and anything constructive you can offer. I can't make a user on the original forums, nor on the new one for GMod beta, however I thought I'd post it here to help anyone. Hopefully this will be bumped enough for Garry or a mod to see it so it can be posted somewhere. Enjoy! Link: http://rubidiumlabs.net/wiki/index.php?title=Garry%27s_Mod/Linux_server_setup
Very well made tutorial! Would be great if any mod could import this to the GMod Wiki.
Very well made tutorial! Would be great if any mod could import this to the GMod Wiki.
Thanks so much! I'm also adding techniques that I've learned from a few months of server administration I'm 14 and to learn is quite easy. I'm adding screen techniques, auto-start scripts etc..
Update: Added administration techniques, screen tips, backup scripts.
Update: Added administration techniques, screen tips, backup scripts.
I noticed that you had a portion of your tutorial linking to compiling a kernel. Most of the guides I found about this were somewhat useful, but most had something wrong or outdated in them. I attempted to take everything I found when I created my own kernel and put it into a wiki. If you want to take a look, check out http://wiki.c-nas.com/index.php/Creating_a_Custom_Kernel Doing this really does help performance quite a bit. Use the guide if you want (link to it or copy from it, etc just give me credit) I would rather see it taken and expanded on then left festering on my server :P Also, good job on the wiki. I see quite a few things that we had to figure out in the course of running our Linux server in there.

Like I said before, I'm 14 so learning things is quite easy, and I run my own server at home, so I learn loads. Doing this really does help performance quite a bit. Use the guide if you want (link to it or copy from it, etc just give me credit) I would rather see it taken and expanded on then left festering on my server :P Also, good job on the wiki. I found it interesting to read as I didn't even know what a kernel was! Also: Added keywords help so that users can see a definition of words they may not know.
