GMod freezing my computer if I join a game in progress without the game running

If I attempt to join a game without Garry's Mod actually running, GMod seems to freeze up and cause my entire computer to be frozen until GMod eventually crashes or I restart my computer. After doing this, I have to verify my GMod files and 1 file always has to be reacquired.

Now, the simple solution is to launch the game first but admittedly I sometimes forget to do that and, as a result, experience this bug. Is this happening to anyone else?

I was told by someone it has to do with addons trying to update as I connect. I'm going to go with this for now unless anyone else has ideas.
