What is the difference between hosting a server with Linux against Windows? Do you need to do anything different compared to windows? [editline]21st April 2014[/editline] Also what do you prefer?
Windows is utter shit for everything that has to do with any kind of server hosting, while Linux is a beauty. The difference is that Linux is entirely controlled via a "terminal", or SSH (Secure Shell). While Windows has RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) that emulates a screen. Windows usually costs $15-$30 extra / month depending on what host you wish to buy from while Linux is entirely free. Don't take me wrong though, I know for a fact that if you are a new linux user, you will hate it at first. I did, everyone else did and you will too. Give it a few weeks and you will see the beauty in it. I hated it at first because stepping from Windows to Linux is hard but ever since I started feel comfortable with it, I've never touched a Windows server ever since and will never do.
Well the reason why i was asking is because i just purchased a server and it comes with Linux and i wasnt sure if you need to do anything special to make the files work properly.
Do anything special to make the files work properly? How do you mean? You get the linux server files through SteamCMD and then you're done. You can transfer the "garrysmod" directory from a Windows server to a Linux server, although nothing above that directory works on Windows.
Well when looking at a few things it said that i needed to keep the folder names without capitol letters. For example (pointshop) NOT (Pointshop)

Also would you say that 16 USD is a decent price for a 22 player server that comes with one click mod installation fastdl mysql and 35+ gbps ddos protection?

The only thing they do is buying a few Dedicated Servers, a WHMCS License and TCAdmin licenses and then they only have to answer support tickets about things they don't know shit about because they have no clue how shit operate. Also, most of them overload their machines so you will experience shitty performance from time to time. And one last thing, that DDoS protection won't do shit because they are already being targeted by every single kid with a shell booter that got banned by one of their customers on their darkrp server. So yeah, you're better off getting a VPS or Dedicated Server from a reliable company with E3-1230v2's nodes.
All the stuff you are offered is just to make you think its better. Mysql takes 2 seconds to set up and 1 click mod installation is just a slower, less client friendly version of workshop. FastDL just means compressing your files and storing them on a fast webserver. TL;DR: Don't buy from gsps when you can do it yourself for half the price.
