Basically, me and one of my brothers share a computer, and we each own garrys mod and for years have played garrysmod on the same computer with separate folders and all that, but after the release of garrysmod 13, Gmod was somehow uninstalled. When we reinstalled it the install path was common and we could not change that, so we each were trying to operate from the same folder, although we both had copied our saves and addons and dupes and stuff into the common folder, only one of us had our stuff in game, so the only person who could play garrysmod was my brother, please if anyone knows how to make gmod run from separate folders again it would be a life-saver!
you could do a separate steam installation for yourself or your brother
This is one of the perils of Steampipe that valve only addresses by having settings for player accounts going through steam cloud, but doesn't address dynamic file contents for a game such as Garrysmod.
If you have different saves/addons/dupes then they should all merge within the same folders and be usable, unless you have for some reason used the same names for everything. I see no reason why 2 people's different files couldn't co-exist, it seems like you're replacing whole folders instead of just merging them.
Well we have both been trying for a while and cant come up with a solution, its almost like our files aren't compatible with eachother.... on the other hand, i dont suppose a steampipe "fix" is a possibility?
i mean if this is a real problem for some people wouldn't it be kind of a given for valve to fix the file contents problem somehow?
This seems like something that would be more suited for Steam support, as it has to do with it's Steampipe system. You could try installing Steam twice to two different locations or even a second hard drive.
Steam doesn't install more than once to the same computer. That should be obvious to anyone who has ever used Steam.
just copy steam.exe to another folder, it will download any missing files
Ahh yes, that idea came up, however the gmod executable only runs from one location so the problem would still persist, we even tried that at one point.
