My mate crashes upon opening console, did a bit of googling and no solution jumped out at me that actually worked (one made it worse, the mat_dxlevel 95 stopped him from being able to join gmod servers)
anyone got any idea on this problem?
I tried to run GMod in DX8 (because my performance on higher DX levels is terrible), and it also crashed when trying to open the console. I think DX8 is not supported and has many problems, so don't use it. Try to run the game with the command line "-dxlevel 95". It should do the same as the solution you found. It worked for me.
