"hl2.exe is not responding" error when I open Gmod

Okay, so here's basically what happens: I'd start the game, and then when I try and click "Start New Game" (or anything, for that matter), it'll stop working. I've had this issue for god knows how long, and it's really pissing me off. Does anybody know how to fix this?
