GMod Problem: GMod crashes while downloading addons that are required to play on a server

I try to join the Smashing Limes DarkRP server, but when it is extracting COD4 NPCs and Playermodels, the game crashes.
It does this every time I try to connect to the server, and this isn't the only server that does this, and this isn't the only workshop addon this happens with, either.

On the Newbie Nation basewars servers, while it's extracting one of the M9K weapon packs, it crashes.

Is there any way to fix this?
