Cannot start Garry's Mod on Linux Mint 18 (Ubuntu 16.04)

Hi, I didn't play for a while and when I decided to do a bit, I launch Steam it updated Garry's Mod, but after I press Play the "Preparing to launch Garry's Mod" popup appears, but nothing after that, it just closes and nothing is happening.
I tried to reinstall GM as well as Steam entirely, didn't help
Linux builds of the game now depend on GLIBCXX 3.4.19. You may run in to some issues if your C++ runtime is a decade out of date.
And how to fix it?

but it didn't
Hey, I had the same problem on Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 and the error logs were really not that helpful but were helpful enough, I looked in there and it said:
Found joystick 'Generic X-Box pad' (03000000c62400009753000000010000), but no recognized controller configuration for it.
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/GarrysMod/hl2.sh: line 67: 20195 Aborted (core dumped) ${GAME_DEBUGGER} "${GAMEROOT}"/${GAMEEXE} "$@"
And I remembered TF2 having problems with the controller so I unplugged my Xbox controller from my PC and I started GMod and it started just fine. I hope this helps!

holy cr*p, I helped, I had to unplug my.... mouse lol, I got a laptop, so when I unplug it and use hmm... touchpad it runs, but as soon as I plug in mouse it doesn't start anymore.
Thanks :) Where have you found that log btw? And mb you know how to fix this so I don't have to play with my touchpad :)
Ah sucks that you can't use your mouse! It's a really weird bug. I hope one of the devs will see this thread! I found the log in ~/.steam/error.log, but the file was filled with garbage so GEdit wasn't able to open it, I used NeoVim to open it. And when I say garbage, I mean there's a line that has an F-ton of ^@, whatever that means. One way that you could open it with GEdit might be doing `rm error.log && touch error.log` and then trying to start your game and after Steam shows the game isn't running anymore, open it with GEdit and see if it says something useful. ^^
Hello,
i have the same "Joystick Error" but the error says that my mouse is the problem.
Error: "Found joystick 'ROCCAT ROCCAT Tyon Black' (030000007d1e00004a2e000011010000), but no recognized controller configuration for it."
I have no other mouse here, so any have a tweak or fix for that?
I tried every mouse, keyboard, and controller in my possession and couldn't reproduce this. If you know how to get a core dump from the game on your Linux distribution, email it to willox@facepunchstudios.com and I'll take a look.

I can always take a guess though. I think this will be fixed on the development branch. If you want to try it out:
- Exit the game
- Right click on Garry's Mod in Steam and select Properties
- Go to the Betas tab and select the desired branch
