I have a very simple map, large though it may be, and the compiling window always freezes when it reaches 8 or 9 in Hammer. Is this a problem? Some system stuff: Windows 7, 8Gbs RAM, NVidia GeForce Graphics card, I don't know much else.
Well it depends (also this may not be the best section to be asking this question) Have you cordoned off the used part of the map? Otherwise it's trying to build the entire map, which is awful for performance.
If it's real simple and a good small, medium size then it should take a few minutes. If it has a lot of props and brushes then it can take hours or days. Depending how much speed your computer has.
Compiling time depends on map size, lights and many other factors.
You can decrease compiling times by a huge amount by going to run map, then unticking HDR and setting the middle compiling option (i think its VIS) to fast.

This. But don't do that for the final compile. When you do the final version set it to normal and let it run overnight.
