I open Garry's Mod, and I'm having trouble getting my friends into the server every time I create a multi player game. I choose the map, make the settings, but whenever someone trys to join, it says "Server Not Responding"
I have no idea why this happens. I'm not too bright on this sort of subject. an anyone please help me out..?
Thanks in advance.
Because you need to host a server. The server you create is on your computer and your computer only.
Download SRCDS, get a youtube vid of creating a Gmod server, portforward, and you're done.
That is not true, you can host GMod listen servers. You just need to forward ports 27005 through 27015 on TCP and UDP. For a guide on doing this, see http://www.portforward.com
Also, make sure that "maxplayers" is set to something higher than 1, and that sv_lan is set to 0.

What exactly is SRCDS? And do you know where I can find it..? I'm not willing to pay money for anything though.. If that were the case I'd rather buy a dedicated server with my friends.
SRCDS is just a tool you use to host a dedicated server. There's really no point in running it on your own computer, it's much more efficient to use a listen server.

Not to sound like a complete idiot.. But what is a listen server?
A listen server is created with the "Create Server" option - all packets from other clients are relayed through you, and when you leave, the server dies. The alternative is a dedicated server, which is run separately from GMod. It's just a console window, and any dedicated server starts out empty, while a listen server always has at least one player (the hoster).
Ah. Okay. So a listen server is made within the game..? Or would I have to get that somewhere?

Can't listen servers only be played through LAN (LOCAL-Area-Network)?

You make one every time you click "Create multi-player game". Players just can't join because you haven't forwarded ports on your router properly.

Nah. I run a listen server frequently and people from Finland to Portland, Maine (or Portland, Oregon for that matter) can connect just fine. It is more laggy than a dedicated server, though. LAN mode is only determined by the value of the sv_lan ConVar. As far as I know, you could have a dedicated LAN server if you really wanted to.
Uhm. Well! Do you have any idea how to forward ports..? I have no idea what that is, really. I feel kinda stupid. Lol
Oh, yeah. Don't worry, once you learn you'll be able to apply this knowledge to tons of other instances where you'll need to forward ports. The first step is to find out the brand and model of your router. Once you know that, you can follow this guide which will set you up to forward ports. The ones you want to forward are 27005 through 27015, TCP and UDP. Just remember that information, since you'll probably need it later on in the guide.
Thanks! I think I know what to do now. I've been trying to find the answer to this forever. You really helped me out there. I owe you one. :D
