I've been playing with Gmod for some time now, I've just never bothered to check out the online segment. I was having plenty of fun screwing with the single-player campaigns of Half-Life 2 and didn't see how the experience could translate to a multiplayer game. After seeing some impressive YouTube videos, I really want to get in on the online play Gmod offers, but I can't seem to get into any servers. It's bad enough that every server I try requires 500+ file downloads before I can get a glimpse of it, but every time I get into a server the host just boots me before I can even do anything. The only time I got into a server to stay, the host was apparently AFK and I had some other guy telling me "Get out of here, you don't belong here." Is there some kind of noob-friendly server I just haven't found yet, or some sort of initiation ritual I have to go through before I can play Gmod with others online?
What do you mean the server boots you? Buffer overflow? Also you probably just found an asshole server or something if they immediately told you to leave.
don't join servers with [L] next to the gamemode and the only good build servers usually have only 8 as the max players.
Hey, don't worry. Like any Internet community, there's a fair share of unfriendly users. I suggest you only join servers that look "official", are wearing tags, are dedicated, and have some sort of community behind them.
It's all about where you go. If you go to more established servers -- like clans, you'll generally find them to be more tolerable with you. :)
Well, I personally wouldn't boot someone unless they were being annoying or something, and I use only the bare minimum of custom content so anyone with WireMod/PHX/GCombat wouldn't see any errors. Maybe you should check it out, I'm the only admin and it's a dedicated server, but I'm almost always watching the server's console there shouldn't be anyone being a dick. Anyways, check it out if you want. IP: 98.221.201.255
I still don't understand what is the problem with the [L]. Was does that means?
[L] Means it's a listen server, which means the owner is both hosting and playing on the server at the same time. Personally I say its a myth that if its a listen server it sucks, but it's easier for mingebags to host listen servers so it does have some merit.
I ran a listen sandbox server on mobenix once, got about 2 people in there, but they never taked :\ I beleive it was called Bran's Sanbox or something along those lines.
gm_construct listen servers get quite a bit of traffic in my opinion. I've seen loads of them.
