• Compressing my LUA files?

Well basically ULX,ULib,UTeam,gStream,Wire,PHX3, Smart Freeze, Anti-Noclip, Easy Precision, Smart Snap, Stacker, Advanced Stacker, Conna's Tools, Malawar's Tools, Smart Weld, Smart Constraint, etc etc etc. Comes out to around 600ish LUA's. According to this guy, apparently I'm "some idiotic kid that shoves every addon he can on his server".
A server will rarely have 400 lua files, unless it's some idiotic kid that shoves every addon he can on his server. Custom gamemodes, ie the upper class communities will usually be under 100 (dua) files, or even consideratly less. Sure, if you don't change your clientside files much then I agree, Bzip2ing them maybe advantageous just for that 0.1 second check, but otherwise, it's just not worth it.
So I'd like to know how it's possible to have all the necessary building tools and such while keeping a low LUA count. Also, whats a DUA? I'll google it and read up on it later, I just want to know a simple sum up of what it is, thats all.
You really don't like me do you? :v: A Dua file is the cache which is sent to the client, that's what they download. http://www.frihost.com/forums/vt-21170.html
nah, i have no probs with you dude. You seem pretty knowledgeable and were only trying to give me advice back there. I took it the wrong way and ended up being a bit of a prick. Apoligize for that. Otherwise no harm done. "BZIP2 Files are used only with the Web server. It is in this place that they will be stored. (NOT ON THE GAME SERVER ) " Hm.... Also, can you compress LUA's with it? And what about the above statement?
Ok, you have two things in Garrysmod (and most other MP games). You have the server and the client. The server in this case uses the lua files, the client gets sent "dua" files. These files can be found on the server in cache/dua. You can compress these, however it's debatable as to if it's worth it or not, as these files are usually around the 5-10kb mark.
ah right, I was thrown off how they said "webserver" I was thinking of port 80 and what not, still dont get what they mean by game server tho.
Well, for fastdl, you need a webserver, or at least a server that supports http, because you have to upload all the files to there. Consider it a mirror really, however a much faster one. The game server is like the Gmod server.
ah, if you upload your server files to a webserver how do you link your server so that it gets the addons from that site? Perhaps this is what I'm looking for? http://wiki.garrysmod.com/?title=Setting_up_sv_downloadurl
Yep, what you have there is correct.
