• FPS increases a lot when menu is open

I was playing Garry's Mod with "cl_showfps 1" enabled in the console and noticed that when I pressed esc to open the menu the fps counter basically doubled from 20 to 40. The game was not paused or frozen, there were definitely physics objects moving in the background, and as far as I could tell the lighting was exactly the same. What could cause this large speedup that occurs only while the menu is visible?
It's normal. GMOD:s HUD and menu takes 20+ fps usually. Don't worry.
Lucky you. For me, FPS goes down.
Oh shit. Sorry, i thought it decreased. Rate bad readings. :D

The background isn't being rendered thus the framerate increases. That's why when you tend to hop off the Q menu, you get a slight stutter for a moment.
