• Garrys mod crashes

I'm having some serious problems with Garrys mod. I bought CS:S and Gmod yesterday, and since then I've had nothing but problems. When i start, there are some graphics issues such as no loading screen (the "G" surrounded by spinning circles) and i have no cross hair or weapons selector. that's not too bad. The problem is that sometimes, about 2/3 of the time my computer restarts. just reboots with no warning. Windows says that my computer has just recovered from a serious error and asks my to send a report. I tried rebooting XP, steam, Gmod, everything. I tried the -80 directx startup option to no avail. I also tried setting the affinity of hl2.exe to only 1 cpu, which actually solved the graphics problems for about 1 minute, after which they dissapeared and my computer restarted. I can play Half Life 2 with no issues. I've searched the forums here and elsewhere with no suggestions working for me. I really want to be able to play Gmod. Thanks! System Specs- Intel Pentium 4 with HT technology (3.00GHz) -1GB ram -Intel 82865G integrated graphics with 96MB memory (according to CPU-Z) -Windows XP pro 32 bit. -Garrys mod 10 -Intel chipset on an IBM mobo.
If you have the orange box, don't play GMod, as it will just crash and burn, and since you have the 865 it's even worse, I don't know how you play HL2 since you are well below the requirements, Time to upgrade, Newegg is your friend www.newegg.com
Wow, thanks for the quick reply. Even if i'm below the requirements for HL2, i apparently meet the requirements for GMod. (I don't have the orange box by the way. I forgot to mention that it's the demo.) I didn't really want to resort to a hardware upgrade, but if there's no other way then so be it. But I'd like to try everything I can before falling back on that.
System Specs- -Intel Pentium 4 with HT technology (3.00GHz) -Intel 82865G integrated graphics with 96MB memory (according to CPU-Z)
problem, upgrade or this isnt going to work any time soon, especially that GPU
Yeah, I was hoping it wouldn't come to that... But, I guess if it's the only option then it's off to NewEgg for me! Thanks for the responses.
whats your budget? and the mobo name. or do you have the cash for a complete new system?
Well, I'm DEFINITELY going for sub-100$ preferable ~50$, and my mobo is an IBM 2AKT48AUS with an Intel i865p/PE/G/i848P chipset (Again, taking this info from CPU-Z). The catch is that I only have PCI slots on this one, and the space for ports in the rear is ~3.5 inches from the PCI port. I'm looking on NewEgg now and i'm seeing some pretty good 128/256, which is what I'd like to get. 128-1 GB ( I know I'm probably not going to find a 1GB card with these constraints but I'm seeing some...) And by the way... is this in the wrong section now? And I don't want to get a new system. EDIT:This one looks good... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130188
This one looks good... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130188
No it doesn't, trust me, I have a 128MB Graphics Card and I can barely play Gmod in Low Settings (CPU and RAM are fine), choose something up to 256Mb
Thanks for that. I'm gonna have to go shopping on NewEgg with all this new info. Also, this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130498 EDIT: And it comes with a DVI-VGA adapter, which is good, considering the fact that the VGA port on tha card wouldn't be accessible due to my PC's form factor.
EDIT:This one looks good... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130188
That's a horrible card by today's standards. The very least you should get is an ATi 4670 or an NVidia 9600GT. Of course, you have to make sure your mobo can support it and if you want to play games on PC you just have to accept the fact that it isn't going to be cheap.
Well, no 9600s for me. none on NewEgg. Can a 9400 really be that much worse? EDIT: @Blue Crimson- I thought you were referring to the other post with the link to the 9400 card. I don't understand why I wasn't warned about my video card while before playing Gmod (or HL2 demo as I recall) but I was when I played CS:S for the first time. Also, why does my computer restart instead of slowdown or speed up the fan or something of the sort? the game plays fine 1/3 of the time (- the graphics issues mentioned in the first post.).

You DON'T want to skimp out on the graphics card. I believe your computer restarts because it knows that it isn't capable of smoothly playing the game.
Huh. It plays perfectly (and smoothly) sometimes. So does HL2. I've had graphics issues with games before, but they usually just had texture issues (Fable) or graphics overload (WoW). I don't know much about graphics cards. What about a 9500GT? Thanks for the help with that. I guess I'll keep looking! :)
9500GT is the card I use, and it's great. Get a 512mb version though.

Just make sure your motherboard is compatible, or else you'll come back here complaining about how it doesn't work.

Hm. Well, I'm not looking for powerhouse graphics, just playability. Looks like the 9500 might be the card for me. I'm fairly sure my motherboard is compatible. I'll check though. By the way, CoolCorky, why 512MB? Does the 1GB draw too much power? Or are you saying AT LEAST 512? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187083&cm_re=9500-_-14-187-083-_-Product This looks good. Anyone have any experience with Sparkle? I'll check my PSU voltage. Thanks for the help.

I meant at least 512MB, as my last card only had 256 and it was crap and didn't do what was required of it.
