I once had this problem and in minutes the problem dissapeared without any explaination
It happened again on 20-th Januar 2010 ... today!
There was some kind of Steam client update <- i think it's that
Well, i wasn't joined to any steam beta-s etc.
And this happened to me
I started steam, asked for restart because of an new steam client update
so i did it and now i can't play Gmod online anymore
In the find servers it says Steam Beta must be running for find servers
I have tried to delete the clientregistry.blob
From peta participations there isn't any
And it doesn't go away
How can i fix it?

I've just updated. I'm hoping it will work for me.
Mine works.
I still don't know what actually happened that my steam appeared off to games
Propably deleted something important, don't know what
But i got a bit smarter
in my language there are letters like ÄÜÖÕ
And apparently steam doesn't recognize it
Uncheck the start with windows (creates a lot of bugs for some reason)
Got the gamemodes to pop up under games list
Less crashes (i think)
So... install in a good directory!
Alternate languages can do that, that's why you should usually keep steam installed to an English language directory.
