• Is Evo City a wise choice of map for an RP server?
    19 replies, posted
So I recently opened an RP server, and it's been locked for the past two days for straight coding and testing, after adding cars we found that the roads were way too narrow, and the map was too small for cars. Some people suggested Evocity, my biggest worry is the download size scaring away new players, so would adding Evocity as the map for the RP server be a wise idea?
It depends the number of players the community attracts, and the type of Roleplay. Downtown and other RP maps of that type have very conglomerated Roleplay, while Evocity is more dispersed.

The only thing bad about Evocity is its download size. If you want to keep your server so people can join really quick this is not the thing to get. I believe it is 125.940 MB.

Well I am the coder of his server one thing is is I do not know if the FastDL works, the previous coder sort of messed it up I used "http://yourserverip/yourserverip-port" in my server.cfg the whole line is sv_downloadurl "http://yourserverip/yourserverip-port" .
That has nothing to do with what he's asking. Bottom-line, the size of Evocity doesn't really matter with FastDL; the real question is if the in-game size of the map is too large with a small playerbase.

Evocity is brilliant choice but if there is too many players, it turns out bad because there is alot traffic and it starts to lag a bit. 300mb

If your custom DarkRP server handles about 3 people on average then it's a shitty choice to make EvoCity your server's map, end of story.
I think the rp community needs more maps. Not edited, ripped, poorly done copies of rp_downtown2 or whatever. The old ones are classic, sure, but they're stale too. The gamemode doesn't matter as much as the map.
I baised view here, being one of the devs of evocity and all. Personally, I think its a good choice in map choice for a new community since the map does offer many roles, and great flexibility on top of that. However, if your members logons are sporadic and few, or if the community wants a better map. You may want to review your decision. Every map has a different fit and style of its own. You wouldnt do HL2RP on Evocity, would you? Since your community is just starting up, be aware of the communities first breaths and steps. Listen to the community as a whole, and see what they want.

gm_flatgrass 100/100 players guarrenteed

Sometimes there can be a ton of players online without anything going wrong, and sometimes it can be pure chaos. If it's really a problem, you could make your current admins more efficient by creating better modding tools. Such as a command that lights up all player-made props through walls when activated by an admin, seen only by the admin. A little box that tells when damage is done to a player caused by another player (or prop, I guess) with tabs for prop spawning in LOCATION.... you get the point.
Keep in mind, your admins should also be roleplaying and not just being some omnipotent being watching over the entire sky, for every waking moment. Nothing aggravates me more than having some admin noclipping around through the sky, and into your building constantly. Interrupting you acting out your role by being a nuisance. But this these aren't things of what a map can do for you. These are factors of scripting, and the aptitude of your admins. And if you really want cars, I think evocity is the best choice for you. See if it fits, see if the community adapts to it and fits well. You can get a heavily populated server, but what percentage of them come back? Who become dedicated to the community and contribute back. And out of all those, who are members and admins on the forums or offserver chat? With all that taken into consideration, review the content and quality of the server and forums. And if that all fits your communities focus, then everything is well.
Eh, it can work pretty well to fly around checking out things, not 100% of the time mind you. Also admins should make themselves invisible while doing so, just looks kind of annoying to see something flying through the walls.
From what I've seen, Evocity is a great choice only for big servers however. I'm in the same boat as you because I have a TTT server that is fairly populated and I'm planning on making a DarkRP because it's a great gamemode. My current plan is by using downtown and then using evocity when I get bigger.
