hl2.exe error on startup

Having recieved this error;
hl2.exe has encountered a problem

I tried the following
Using the Launch options with -dxlevel80, -autoconfig, -dxlevel8 [the correct spelling if incorrect, copied from the utube vids].
They failed to work.
Verified the game cache. Failed to fix.
Deleted hl2.exe, then verified the game cache to replace it. Failed to fix.
Copied contents of /bin from the C:/programfiles/steam/..../bin into the garrys mod root directory where hl2.exe is.

These were all the fixes I could find on the interwebs and they were unable to solve my problem.
My GMOD has worked, post-update I recieved the client() error and then post solveupdate I recieved this error. It has worked for several months without this error.

Any other ideas? I will now get the additional error information.

rename the garrysmod folder to garrysmodold or something like that then start up Garry's Mod and see if that fixes the problem.
