I'm tired of zooming around to complete crap-fests that make me download 50 workshop addons, let me play for two minutes, then either ban me or crash because of some mingebag.
Basically I just want to find a half-decent home base, one that isn't too restrictive with spawning stuff, is pretty much vanilla, and has an okay admin.
This probably doesn't exist in Gmod's current state, but if anyone has any tips, please tell me. I live on the U.S. West Coast if that means anything.

Unfortunately they're quite hard to find because it's hard to fill one up. If people actually played sandbox then yeah it'd exist. Best to find a few dedicated people and host a private server
"T-Mans Build and Kill" has a pretty strong community of guys that are easy to get along with. Strong owner presence also, so things stay up-to-date.

I will not link my server because it'd feel like bragging and I also think a server's reputation is made by it's players supporting it, not advertising administrators,
Altough I think I can give out a piece of advice on how to "size" a server to know if its worth putting time into it or if its populated with douches.
In my opinion, you will get to choose a server where you will stay and stick to the community after trial and error.
Noone will just stand out of the crowd and convince you their server and community is better and awesome'er.
Indeed it is annoying to download a handfull of addons if you aint even sure about staying on a server,
but on the other hand this server has chances of being awesome if it has good addon content installed (dosn't mean that a low content server is no good!)
Past this point its more of a personnal matter, do you build with regular props? Do you love to scene using content from all around? Are you a wire addict?
The first criteria for which you should seek is IMO, the rationality of the admin judgements, the rules established and the treatments guest users receive.
Also the freedoms that are given to guest users leave you an impression of the top administration's judgement.
IMO sandbox really gets fun when playing with friends or friendly strangers, being in a community is what makes it entertaining days after days of playing.
Alright, ty for the responses, guys. I'll try out the server you suggested, but I also happened upon one I rather like. I believe it's called MetaConstruct. Not very vanilla, but its building area is nice. It's owned or at least frequented by CapsAdmin, creator of PAC3, and has the mod installed, which is a big plus in my book.

I can usually find a decent one with 5-8 players and sometimes pull a all-nighter doing stupid shit lol
Many of the better servers post the high profile addons they have in their titles.
For example, if you want a server that has PAC3, use the search bar to find it! It's how I found many a server back before I hosted my own.
