I've tried every fix from changing files around, deleting/re-installing, changing names of files, going into the command script, and everything else that other ppl have tried but I keep getting the message: hl2.exe has stopped working .......it is annoying...and I wish for any info available to fix it......this is what model laptop im using: Model: Dell Inspiron 1525 Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5800 @ 2.00GHz 2.00 GHz Memory (RAM): 4.00 GB System Type: 32-bit Operating System Internet: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family Windows Edition: Windows Vista Home Basic with: Service Pack 1
I think i've figured out how this happens, I have the same problem, apparantly GameOverlayUI.exe doesn't start with hl2.exe, causing the game to fuck up, there's a txt document that shows when the program has started, it doesn't sya that it started when I launch CSS. i've tried launching GameOverlayUI.exe after I've launch Gmod, but GameOverlayUI.exe doesn't manually start. Wait, nevermind, I found out GameOverlayUI.exe is just the Shift-Tab thing.
hmmm ok...did it work? I'll try it but I might run it 1st b4 gmod thnx
i have the same problem if anyone finds a fix for this i need one (note i h ave gmod10)
when does it happen? You can reproduce it every time? It was doing for me randomly during the game, but I figured out that I had too low voltage on my CPU for it's frequency :)
Do you guys have vista?

You don't need to quote the first post. There are many causes for the HL2.exe is not working error. When did this start, randomly, or when you got Garrys Mod?
Do you guys have vista?
Vista is not a factor here, as I run Vista and i've never had a problem with Gmod. I hate it when you get these anti-vista nuts that are like ITS VISTA!1!11!1 Honestly. Also, your problem lies in that you're using a chipset and a laptop. Orange Box engine is designed to work with a graphics card, and thus has pixel shading etc etc. Get an actual PC instead of a laptop. Or, try doing -dxlevel 80 in your launch options.
I KNOW RIGHT. Vista isn't THAT bad for running games. It's not the source of the problem. Also, I'm waiting for the 'Are you running Vista? 'Yes.' 'THEREZ UR PROBELM!!!!1111oneoenoene'

i use vista 64-bit OS and I don't have a problem with anything 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999% of the fucking time. Those people are are anti-vista have never tried it OR don't know how to use it.

I have been using 64bit Vista for a year already and also without problems. Garry's mod is also flawless. And I can use my 4GB of RAM and not just 3.5GB like those 32bit noobs ;-)
I have 32bit , but for some odd reason, it shows me as having 4gigs :D yay.
You need to downgrade to less RAM, 32-bit can't support 4 GB of RAM. But I assume this could be a problem as well, Model: Dell Inspiron 1525 You're really trying to run it on a laptop? And a Dell one at that?
I figured out that if you use system restore to restore your computer to before you installed steam, then install the games, the error stops.
I figured out that if you use system restore to restore your computer to before you installed steam, then install the games, the error stops.
it was most likely because you had changed something from your computer, and the system restore, "restored" it, which allowed gmod to work.
Did you not read the post date?
Its still a valid problem, and I get it alot, I think people have just realised (inc me) that the entire problem comes from people trying to run Gmod on laptops. Though I am supprised how well these laptops seem to cope, granted with blood and effects turned off, and graphics set to lowest possible lol.
Did you not read the post date?
yes, i did. But like he said above, this is still a common problem, and i just thought i would let people know that, that fix was not always the case. how can that work for people, who have had steam installed for months. if not years. saves them wasting their time on a 2 month old system restore, only to find, it doesn't work. well i just used a bit of experimenting, and i got it to work for my friend (acer laptop, running vista) by setting the launch options to
-dxlevel 81 -window
dunno if it will help you guys, but good luck :)

wow, i feel so smart :) :keke: [editline]11:52AM[/editline] see, bringing this thread back to life wasn't pointless. :colbert:
Fixed.
Nope. -dxlevel 81 is valid. It tells Source to run with DirectX 8.1 (which is NOT 8.0 so it does NOT give the same result as -dxlevel 80)
Well it worked didn't it? [editline]08:49PM[/editline] wait one minute... i thought u said it wasnt valid. lol. well you have confused me anyway :)
