Hello, I'm looking for a great forum for my coumminty. I've used phpBB in the past, but I really want to hear what's good now.
myBB or SMF are pretty good choices, SMF has really slick looking paid themes available although I struggled to find a decent myBB theme without tons of manual CSS editing. SMF is also really bad plugin wise imo
MyBB. A lot more secure than SMF. Exploits get fixed faster than at SMF and also exploits get faster spread, meaning they'll get fixed faster too. If you want to then you can later upgrade to something like VBulletin or IP.B - but I would only do that if the forum really is used.
VBulletin / Xenforo
Maybe this will help:) Source: http://www.forum-software.org/mybb/review myBB phpBB http://www.forum-software.org/phpbb3/review
I am using myBB for my forum. Before I used myBB I used SMF... I recommend myBB!
I find SMF to be the best, but the problem is it is quite vulnerable to spam if you don't get some protection against it(my general discussions section got 12k+ of ads in a night, which is how I learned).
I'm using MyBB currently, and I personally like it better than vBulletin or phpBB. It has some awesome plugins, themes, and great admin tools. Also very easy to customize if need be.

Of course you need to know a bit of PHP to do this, but it saves you a lot of effort of removing spam continually. I use the botscout database on my forum and I rarely ever get spam registrations anymore. http://botscout.com/ That being said, I use an older version of Invision Power Board in the 2.x branch that I bought a license for years ago. I've had to make a bunch of security patches for it over the years. I don't upgrade to 3.x or whatever the newest version is because I don't want to have to port my custom skin over, and the license fees for IPB have gotten more than ridiculous. It used to be $60 for a license, and now is nearly $200 for the same thing, plus a $25 subscription per 6 months of use for patches and crap (used to be perpetual or yearly.)
If your willing to pay I always go with invision power board because when it comes to plugins/features/themes everything out of the box isn't too difficult to work with. A lot of premium skins are very fixed around one subject or theme yet with ipb most you find are high quality/general and easy to change simply and have a good theme relevant to your topic.
