• Linux version?

I feel like making the switch to Linux but video gaming is dragging me down. Since Garry is making a OS X version of it which is probably using OpenGL, will he ever port it to Linux as well?
If I remember correctly there is no Steam for Linux, so no.
Dunno if you can since the massive steam update, but before that you could WINE steam and source games (though i never tested gmod...)
Rumors are around that Valve is developing a official linux version of steam, so we can assume they will also port all source games. Other than that I run Steam and Gmod on linux via wine, steam sometimes gets incredibly laggy and glitches out, but source games seem to be working perfectly well with wine.
The rumour is that Valve will release a linux version of steam by the end of summer. Don't really know about that though...

What should I do to make it stop crashing?

It is not perfect, and varies from PC to PC (even with the same hardware/ distro/ kernel/ drivers). The most you can do is try some fixes that float around the Internet.
Run a standalone version through WINE. It should work better.

However, they don't work, they just show the "create a new account/login using existing account" screen when you first start up steam, other than that, it doesn't do anything else.
Standalone version? As in non-Steam Garry's Mod?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Also know as; Warez, piracy, stealing, general dickery. Using a non-Steam Garrysmod is not legal, gets you banned from here, and makes you a douche. It is just asking for trouble.

Hell of a lot of red tape and explaining to various cops and ISP people, but legal.
