• Developer looking for a community

Oh boy, I feel like this is totally backwards so I'd like to clear up a few things before I even start. If you meet any of these conditions, I'm almost certainly not interested and you may as well stop reading: -You plan on, or are trying to run a darkrp server in any serious manner -You don't currently have a community or have never run a successful community -You are 100% clueless when it comes to even the most basic of scripting -The financial stability, viability, or longevity of your community is in question -You are legally considered a minor With that out of the way, I'll go ahead and introduce myself. My real name is Jason, I live in Maryland, I'm one year out of high school, and this fall I'll be attending DigiPen for my BS in CS and Game Design. Recently, I've gotten more interested in modding for garry's mod again, but releasing things on the workshop or coderhire doesn't appeal to me. I really enjoy making systems that integrate well together, so I don't want to be making one-size-fits-all addons that constantly get complained about by people that can't even manage to use google. That's why I''m interested in finding a community where I can help develop a fun and cohesive player experience. I'm not even interested in getting paid – I just want to see people enjoying my work. I realize that I'm not very well known on facepunch since I rarely post, but I can have a few of my friends (who are more well known on facepunch) give me a recommendation if need be. I also don't have a ton of gmod work to show off, but here are a couple things that I've done recently: If you have a community that you think I'd be interested in joining, or if you have any questions, then I'd prefer it if you just replied to this thread. I tend to ignore friend requests by default.
I'll vouch for bliptec. I've never worked with him personally, but having seen his work over the years, he's quite the coder.
Just curious, why does it have to be a community? I'm currently running a bunch of prop hunt servers with an active player base, I don't have a community as such, but I do have a steam group. The version of prop hunt on the workshop leaves much to be desired, I've made quite a few changes to it already, but there's still loads more to fix. If you're interested, send me a message.
Hey, I'm Baran I just signed up on this forums to look around more and I'm starting a DarkRP server, no coderhire since I hate those kind of servers hook me up on steam if you want. http://steamcommunity.com/id/dopestowner

I'm honestly not completely sure what I'm looking for, but community sounded like the right word to use. Wouldn't you rather start your own community? Where you have the freedom to what you want?
Wouldn't you rather start your own community? Where you have the freedom to what you want?
Running an actual community is a lot of time, work, and drama.
Running an actual community is a lot of time, work, and drama.
Good point, however, just because you would only be a member, doesn't mean that you would be immune to the drama. Especially if you're going to be a dev, what if the owner of the community you're a part of, decides to take credit for something you made or something? Sorry if I sound like a douche.. I just think that you would be better off in the long run doing it yourself
Start something yourself.
Starting something yourself would be better and hey who knows maybe if you PM the right guys (hint hint) they might even offer to remove you of the financial burden.
If you enjoy small communities where it is a "everyone's buddies let's go have a beer" kind of TTT server I'm completely open. Although I am only 15 I am very compitent when it comes to running a server. I am also easy going. I've just booted back up my server recently since I redid a lot of it (with help from coders of course) so the community is sorta small but all the older remaining removers are chill. If you're interest just reply :) it's a 24 player TTT server on the east coast (near you :D) [editline]1st May 2014[/editline] I also admit to be 75% a coderhire server but now that everything is up and going I plan on drifting away from that. I like keeping TTT at about 50% vanilla 50% not. Although legally I am a minor I have a means of income (a job) to pay for the server costs. I also have a 2nd server that could be used for anything incase you needed one for testing. Add me on Steam if you're interested. I have nothing to hide. My Steam Profile My forum, it still needs lots of work. My server's ip: 108.61.58.117:27016
I'm interested, although I'd rather continue discussion privately. Would you be okay with accepting my Steam invite?
Sorry for not being able to add anybody on steam for the next few days; I'm going to be travelling and really won't have much time to talk. I can definitely see why people are saying that I should start my own community, and I've seriously considered doing just that, but considering that in four months I'll be moving 2800 miles away and taking 21 credit hours worth of classes – I just don't see how that would work out.
Run it for 4 months and then appoint a server manager.
I've got some basic Lua knowledge and I'd like to collaborate with someone to create a gamemode. Yes, I do have a DarkRP server but that is not what I see myself doing "in the future". I only started a DarkRP server to get to know the basics of Lua and get some appriciation for my work. The gamemode I want to make has (as far as I know) only been made once on Garry's Mod, but is poorly moderated and based on DarkRP. I want to start from scratch, but I'm not sure if I can do this project on my own, considering I never created something like this before. Other than this gamemode I have some other ideas that I'd like to work out, however, priorities. Finances are no problem for me, I work as a prototype developer for a big company, a department store with about 8 locations (together with my dad) and work for a real estate business, developing 2 websites for them. I'm 18 years old and study International Game Architecture and Design, as a programmer. I've about 3 years of experience with PHP, +- 9 months experience with C# and C++, a year of JavaScript and I've tried to get into a bit of Java. Started on Lua roughly 3-4 weeks ago, trying to get some E2 functions working (as I guessed that couldn't be too hard). Started writing out some ideas for a gamemode but haven't been able to start on it myself as I first was trying to get the hang of Lua. I ran Casual Bananas for about 2 years. A community that made great profits over the span of +- 1.5 year. Since we had more plans than just running a community we registered ourself at the Chamber of Commerce. We were a legitimate business for about 9 months, we had an office for 6 months but decided to drop that as I went to university +- 1.5 hours away from home. I finally quit the community in December 2013 as I fully disagreed with the way the other owner acted, and sold my share in the business. Since then I've not been doing anything, and recently started up a small community together with my girlfriend running a DarkRP server while I learn to code Lua. I don't see myself hosting DarkRP for a long time, I just thought it'd be easy to start on this rather than start from scratch. I think I meet your requirements. If you think so too, let me know so I can add you on Steam so we can talk things through. I am open to any way of working, I haven't done many coding collaborations before but I'm open too all standards. I like to work with Google Drive though, since it allows us to easily make to-do lists or write ideas out. I do not plan on running any community that has "Gaming" or "Servers" in it. My current community is named Frivolous Fun, but it doesn't have a large playerbase.
Did you guys have a office? How much did you guys make on casual banans
Turnover ranged from $1.5k to $3.6k at some point. Server costs roughly $750, with office around $200 extra. Then we still have to substract all the fees PayPal asks ($0.35 per transaction, and 3.4% per transaction)
Did you guys have a office? How much did you guys make on casual banans
They did, but clearly they didn't make enough to pay my friends for bigisland :v: [sp]apparently that was mostly EXCL/_NewBee's fault though. I consider it to mostly be water under the bridge, but stinger still doesn't feel like EXCL was held accountable[/sp]

EDIT: I hope that doesn't mean that you don't want to work with me, because of that?
I settled this a long time ago with them. Atleast, I did.
Yea, I really didn't mean to derail this thread. It was just too tempting to respond since the topic came up again a couple weeks ago for some reason. Like I said, it was pretty much settled as far as you were concerned but EXCL just blocked them and tried to do damage control so he wouldn't lose face.

I only talked to him because someone asked me if I knew some mappers and I asked him if he was available. But back on thread now :v:
I should also mention that I am not in it for the money, if you are looking for a real profit then skip over me, I do it for the fun and a great community. Sure making money from doing what you love is great but if I make $0 or if I make $1,000, if the server still remains enjoyable I'll keep it up. I also am completely against game changing pay to win donator items.

Just putting in my 100 trillion Nigerian dollars (about two cents)
Other than me being a minor, what did I do wrong?
That's what you did wrong. The simple instruction was for minors to not continue reading. If you hasn't continued reading you'd have no idea what it was really about, nor be able to specifically tackle his points mentioned further on. [editline]1st May 2014[/editline] But hey, doesn't mean to say you're not a nice guy or a competent guy or anything.

It's not like I'm not going to shun somebody just because they didn't follow what I wrote to a T.
I've been helping run a community, but lately I've been to busy to work on the servers. After reading I feel like you may have some interest. I sent you a steam request. So please do check that.
I think you're taking this a bit too far. See y'all later.
I think you're taking this a bit too far. It's not like I'm not going to shun somebody just because they didn't follow what I wrote to a T.
Sent you a PM on Facepunch. If you could check it out whenever you have the time, that'd be chill.
