Alright so I just got the CSS+gmod pack on steam and I know the kind of stuff you can do with gmod because my friend has it and he's actually the one that convinced me to buy it.
The thing is though, I know it doesn't cone with a lot and he said there were a couple of addons and things that I pretty much NEEDED to have so I was wondering if anyone had any advice on addons or just general advice to a gmod newbie?
Play singleplayer first to get the feel of the game before you drown yourself in addons.
Don't get wire... And, uh...yeah that's pretty much it. Oh and the whole addons:loadtime thing.

Right now. Just wait a bit, THEN get wire once you've mastered everything in the Q menu.

- PHX and Wire are pretty much [b]required[/b] addons. However, it's OK (even recommended!) to use vanilla GMod for a while first.
- The more addons you load up, the longer the game takes to get to "playable" state.
Go into entities, click on the cloud icon, then spawn the :Friendly gnome:, pick it up with a physgun and throw it really far, then go back to what you were doing :mmmsmug:.

You don't need much money for that, just try and get the cops to chase you, then run towards the gangsters for hilarious results on a tight budget.

Unless you change it, but that's another episode.
After you get used to the feel of GMod, try to learn some kind of development for Gmod, whether thats mapping, scripting, modeling, machinima, or whatever, you will remain interested in gmod much longer. Also there is more to gmod than just sandbox, there is plenty of other gamemodes, like the 2 that have been included recently, Terrorist Town and Dogfight, are very fun.
