Whenever I join a server, the game immediately stops working. The screen goes black, I can see the taskbar again, and I get an error window saying "hl2.exe has stopped working" with the option to debug or close the program. (Debug won't work, because Visual Studio's evaluation period has expired)
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game, removed addons and modules, reinstalled and rolled back drivers, added "-dxlevel 80" to see if that will make any difference since it resolved crashes on laptops according to one of Garry's blogs, but to no avail.
The game doesn't create a crash log, so it's creating an unhandled exception that the game isn't used to, I guess. I'm assuming it's hardware-related, since I've yet to see this happening for anybody else.
I'm on an HP HDX16T laptop.
2.53 GHz P8700 Core2Duo
NVidia 9600M GT graphics with 256MB VRAM
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
4GB RAM
Sound card is a generic sound card that I haven't tampered with since I've gotten the machine, and I have run it on this machine. It's been awhile since I last played but I believe I played it a month or so ago.
It doesn't work single player or multiplayer, regardless of gamemode.
Any advice, solutions, etc?

Oh, and before I forget: addons have been mostly removed. There is some custom content related to gamemodes that I had been taking a part in development of in the past, as well as some gamemode content that I just got to be able to test it for another gamemode I'm helping with development.
I've removed and re-added them, though, so they are not the cause.

this is happening to me but for me i get in the server download every thing then crashes download the lua cache or joining because it wont load downloaded maps for me
Im having the same problem, everything downloads ok. But when im downloading the final file 'lua cache file' it gets to being fully downloaded then freezes up. No error message, I dont have any addons installed and have only just re-installed GMod on XP.
I have tried cleaning out the cache folder but this doesnt seem to do anything, other than make it run a bit faster.
I can start single player and create my own multiplayer games.
Any ideas on whats going on?
Update-ish
I just ran and left it joining a server then (windowed), after about 20 mins it gave me a failed to connect steam message and is now unfrozen.
Another update:-
Just tryed getting onto a no add-on build server. 'Disconect: Error Snapshot overflow..'
i got the same problem
It's the fucking updates that always just fuck me up
Ok CALM DOWN EVERYONE.
We can try to troubleshoot this in a few easy steps.
1. Windows updated make sure you have them.
2. Graphics card and GPU updated
3. Motherboard updated if needed
4. Shut down your computer and start it back up (nit a restart)
5. Verify the game cache of Garry’s mod.
6. Do an antivirus, spyware, and anti rookit scan. I would suggest adware pro.
7. And last shut off steam, go to the steam install directory and delete ClientRegistry.blob and AppUpdateStats.blob empty your recycle bin, restart your computer and start up steam. These are general trouble shoot instructions follow them well and if doing all these don’t work post back and I have another solution however it is complicated.
^^ That should be added to the FAQ. It Explains everything

Although I'd recommend Malwarebytes-AntiMalware :P
