So I am starting my first server, and I was wondering if there is a place to get all tha basics I need on how to do it. Because whenever I try to start one up, the game always crashes. Thanks.

Are you using a dedicated server (rented or using dedicated server tool) or listen server (using "create multiplayer" in the menu)?
I am using the "Create Multiplayer" button. I would like to learn how to use my own PC as a dedicated server, but for now that is not in my interests.

The steps on port forwarding on the wiki are exactly the same for both listen and dedicated servers. You need to forward ports, obtain your external IP address and start your server. Then give the external IP (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:27015) to your friends and have them connect using the console command "connect <ip address>."
