now when wiremod.com is gone, is there any alternative to its forums? i have a couple of problems with E2 that i would like to ask in an organised fashion
Isnt it just offline ?
Isnt it just offline ?
i belive they had some trouble financing the site so they had to shut it down
i belive they had some trouble financing the site so they had to shut it down
That sounds like a whole crock of shit. It costs virtually nothing to run a site (Unless you get >1000 unique visitors a day or something)
Yeah, they couldn't be financially struggling, especially being that they themselves don't host the svn, and being as they bring in a LOT of donations. Plus, they obviously have money if they're running a $140 forum software.
Damn , thats bad . They need to put up a donation or something
Damn , thats bad . They need to put up a donation or something
They DO always have a donation link.
well, i hope its not true, but it has been down for a few days now so im kinda scared
ITSBTH said that Faron is updating it to Windows 64bit, it should be back up in a day
Ah, that might explain it. Thanks Unsmart.
Why would you have an entire dedi for a forum..?
Who said it was only one server on there?
Who said it was only one server on there?
I believe they use a VPS.
I believe they use a VPS.
In which case windows is a waste of time. Unless they're running something windows-dependant, they could save a hell of a lot of money by using a distro.
Maybe they want a windows server
Maybe they want a windows server
I know you can throw money around like nothing else garry, but having a windows server for the sake of having a windows server isn't cost effective for those of us who aren't millionaires.
I know you can throw money around like nothing else garry, but having a windows server for the sake of having a windows server isn't cost effective for those of us who aren't millionaires.
Since when is Garry a millionaire? It's not like they're that short on money. Maybe their host provides it for free? I've seen a lot of hosts do it.
alright, site is back online, time to lock the thread
Since when is Garry a millionaire? It's not like they're that short on money. Maybe their host provides it for free? I've seen a lot of hosts do it.
If that's the case, fair enough. Most don't though - a single windows license can cost you a tonne, but if your host has a DC licence, then you'd get it a fair bit cheaper. [editline].[/editline] I saw in some article a while back that it was estimated that garry had made in excess of $4m from GMod.
I know you can throw money around like nothing else garry, but having a windows server for the sake of having a windows server isn't cost effective for those of us who aren't millionaires.
It really isn't that expensive. Mine cost $20 a month more than linux servers. You don't have to be a millionaire to spend $20 a month.
It really isn't that expensive. Mine cost $20 a month more than linux servers. You don't have to be a millionaire to spend $20 a month.
You must have a good host. [editline]10th April 2011[/editline] At that price I'd rather just get a small VPS and fire ahead with centos.
I know a host that charges $1000 a month extra for Linux. That means Linux is too expensive install Windows.
I know a host that charges $1000 a month extra for Linux. That means Linux is too expensive install Windows.
Does not compute. Also: I HIGHLY doubt Garry kept even 1/4 of the money he makes from Gmod, considering he has hired people, bought office space, and does other shit.

[editline]10th April 2011[/editline] Office space and server costs will both come under "company expenditure". Up until 2009 (?) garry kept all profit himself; now he just adds to the company finances.
I know you can throw money around like nothing else garry, but having a windows server for the sake of having a windows server isn't cost effective for those of us who aren't millionaires.
Maybe they run a gmod server from it? Maybe they just like windows. Maybe they have a few licenses lying around? Maybe and VERY probably one of them is a student and get free MSDN + DreamSparks? There are a lot of ways to get it for free. Multiple hosts provide a free license, even more provide it for a small fee p/m.
Maybe they run a gmod server from it?
That doesn't rule out linux (Unless you want to use vehicles)
Maybe they just like windows.
Fair enough. Server-wise I'm starting to take a liking to linux, despite only using linux for the first time a month or so ago.
Maybe they have a few licenses lying around?
Perfectly good reason - though I'd still take linux unless I had reason for using windows.
Maybe and VERY probably one of them is a student and get free MSDN + DreamSparks?
Suppose so.
There are a lot of ways to get it for free. Multiple hosts provide a free license, even more provide it for a small fee p/m.
Aye. Suppose, this is all down to personal preference. I like linux, and linux runs better as far as servers are concerned.
Why has this turned into "Flapadar: Why you should get Linux..."?
Why has this turned into: "Alive thread"?
