Garry's Mod Roleplaying: Why themed? Why not just, -roleplay-?
38 replies, posted
Unthemed roleplay, no specific theme, except the core( City, apocalyptic, magical, whatever ). For example, apocalyptic with Dinosaurs, Stalker zombies, cars and stargate?
If you don't quite understand, well, that sucks then. The point is mix shit up, make it new, make it really enjoyable and something new all the time, not just sticking to some preset plot where people scream, "That's not canon oh god no everything will fuck up now!". Leave it up to the players. If someone wants to ride a dinosaur, why not?
No I'm not trolling, the "Dinosaurs, Stalker zombies, cars and stargate" is just a example of mixing things.
You read my mind, man.
You read my mind... I completely agree with this statement.
'omg giving players too much control will make it garry mode darkrp rollple'
hi conna!
PERP tried to let players make the game by only adding 3 jobs, and yet, it's either BE A COP or GROW WEED
PERP tried to let players make the game by only adding 3 jobs, and yet, it's either BE A COP or GROW WEED
what, if the players wanted it to be that, what's the problem?
don't you see what the point is here`?
just like in real life.. atleast where i live.
anyway, perp isn't really.. enforced roleplay..
and what's wrong with weed :(
what, if the players wanted it to be that, what's the problem?

Point being they always resort to a specific thing. There's no point.
Point being they always resort to a specific thing. There's no point.
i mean the point of this thread, what's the problem with cops and weed if the players wants it to be that way. You're the problem always trying to enforce shit which makes it boring.

you remind me of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP0nvei6IUM&feature=relmfu
I understand your point, I agree with it a bit, but sometimes leaving a server too open and vague leaves players lost of what to do, or becomes boring after a few days. The reason some people choose to roleplay from a movie or some existing genre, is because it has a set storyline for the player. It makes your character loosely follow a storyline rather than, "Hey, I'm a guy in a city doing whatever I want."
I agree job and occupations should be more open-- anyone should have the right to make their character as they want, but I think a good storyline for a server powers better roleplay. I think if you just let people do whatever they want, you end up with DarkRP and people stealing eachother's moneyprinters. That may be fun, but I can't really classify that as good roleplay, or even roleplay at all.
People play on Stargate or post-apocalyptic servers because for them that's fun, and for some people DarkRP is fun, who cares? Let them RP how they want.

I don't think you realize that all anyone wants to do is be a "badass" and kill shit.
I don't think you realize that all anyone wants to do is be a "badass" and kill shit.
You're very wrong.
I have a better idea, why not just not roleplay?
You absolutly read my mind.
Like servers with "Hitman" And shit.
Its like just buy a gun and advertise is it really that hard
My zombie apocalypse RP server when it still had (albeit a small one) a playerbase actually did have dinosaurs and stalker mutants. Since no one plays on it anymore I'm either doing one of three things:
-Switching from post apocalyptic RP to fantasy RP with a fresh universe and all new characters
-Switch from post apocalyptic RP to an alternate universe in the same setting, meaning the same lore and shit but a different end result.
-Discontinue my RP server and replace it with a minecraft server
Because people need a game to tell them what to do, rather than finding something to do.
This is why we have classes.
Isn't this idea just edited DarkRP "Hey this is zombies but we have cars and you can buy admin 5$!"

No, it's generally roleplay.

Indeed.
I agree. The GMod community has lost its touch with roleplay.
A core theme is always good and a backstory to go along with it doesn't cause any problems either, but what people tend to get wrong is that they leave no space open for development. HL2RP is an example of a theme often done wrong... Not only has it been done way too many times, but people don't want to add any unique twists to it. It's always just "Follow the canon, do nothing."
I remember playing on a HL2RP server once, and my phys desc had "a tall muscular man" in it, and an admin told me to change it since citizens aren't allowed to be muscular...
This is an idea I've been supporting for a long time.
I've said it before, I'll say it again, some of the most fun RP I've ever had was on a TTT server. It wasn't "SUPR SRS" RP, true, but it was fun. Basically it went down like this, the server in question had a katana swep addon, with two katanas on the map at any given time. So, we decided we would organize a katana fight tournament. Before we began though, some guy jokingly said in a deep voice with fake Japanese accent "Yes, Grandmaster Love (Love was my steamname at the time) has brought together the finest warriors of Japan to compete in the ninth anual katana tournament, to defend their honor!" After that, semi-jokingly we developed a plot behind the tournament. We even went around to each person and asked them to make up a character. Some were better at it than others.
From there, it was decided that everyone would fight in randomly selected 1 on 1 matches until only one person was left, and then the winner would fight the Grandmaster (Me.) At the end, the winner was a guy named Captain Snowman. Once I picked up the katana of the guy he had just killed, I stepped forward and said "You have done well in getting this far, but I have a secret I must reveal before we engage in mortal combat. I am not really Love, am I his evil twin brother, Hate, the same Hate who killed your entire family when you were a child." He responded by saying "You fiend!" I laughed, and said "Yes, and now I will finish what I started by killing you and finally bringing an end to the Snowman Clan!"
After fighting for a little bit, he brought me down to Near Death. After the hit that brought me down to Near Death, I made some dying sounds, crouched, and said "I have been defeated!" I then pretended to commit hara-kiri and killed myself.
Then, the next round, we were on to something comepletely different, running a fake store called "Jihad Mart," selling props, weapons, ammo, and gadgets for a prop, weapon, ammo box, or gadget that we deemed to be of equal or greater value.
While this type of roleplaying might not be serious and realistic, it is fun.
I see what you're getting at, Geikkamir, and while that may be fun sometimes to some people, it often doesn't hold up in the long run.
It's a matter of taste, really, some people enjoy a more in-depth serious roleplay scenario where they can develop their own unique characters, and others like jokingly playing around every now and then, and there's nothing wrong with that.
I really didn't get the intent of the OP, but frankly, roleplaying servers on GMod are laughable.
Don't get me wrong - there are some hardcore RP servers that provide a great atmosphere to get down with some IC stuff, but there aren't a lot.
DarkRP, for instance. These servers really need crack down on the level of stupidity flying around. DarkRP should be no different than any other RP server, with the exception of the map/rules/content. That means people stay In Character, no fucktards acting their mental damage, and people trying to pitch in to provide a roleplaying atmosphere.
Instead, you have kids (or stupid adults) who can barely speak English, running around like they are on fire, and generally causing havoc. This isn't RP. It's just.. lame.
Anyways. I'm all for totally open RP, as long as the entire server isn't disrupted because one person decided to roleplay a maniac.
...And then decides to roleplay one again when he/she dies.
......And again after that.

[sp]SMOKE WEED EVERYDAY[/sp]
[sp]NO FUCKING WAY[/sp]
I think PERP came to closest to a perfect RP, you can be 3 major government jobs. Or just make up what you want to be, this is true RP because the gamemode supplies you with just the basics of what you need to RP, however the community ruined it because they just turned it into a cops vs weed growers thing. True perfect RP would have no selectable jobs, but leave the players to do everything themselves and make everything themselves, some players would band together and elect a ruler, and form there own government, others would try to make different factions and control different parts of the map.
The problem is that the community will always become idiots eventually and ruin it by turning into a deathmatch server. And scripting in ways to gather materials and make items like cars, defibrillator's, and so on, would just be a pain.

PERP was in no-way good RP from the start. Sure. PERP looked amazing, but you had one major issue... The book's cover was a lie for the book's pages. Admins on PE as my memory serves were fucking corrupt as shit, and littearly ran wild just like the players. The only time they would actually intervene was if it directly effected them. For example...
My first memory on PERP was starting a small store with my friend. There we sold guns, and furniture too players, and roleplayed like Southerns. We even added 'yall', 'boy', and 'howdy' whenever we had the chance.
Things were fine for about... 3 Hours? We made a net profit of about 50K, and we were very much enjoying our selves. Now this was all fine, and dandy until we had an inncident where the admin, and his buddy busted into our shop when we closed. We of course were nowhere nearby(out getting supplies). The next thing I see on OOC is, "WHERE THE FUCK IS JOEY/RICK?" at first I thought a customer was at the shop, and I responded, "Oh were out getting supplies, why what do you need?" the next thing we got on OOC made my blood boil, "WE ROB YOUR PLACE, AND NOTHING WAS THERE! GIVE ME MY MONEY FOR BROKING LOCKPICKS" I laughed, and thought this was a joke, I mean seriously who would demand money for breaking into my shop. I responded, "Isn't it your own fault for attempting to break in?" the next thing I know the admin is shouting Rule 43[or whatever the rule is] because we were apparently argueing. I'm glad it shuted the kid up, and I went back to our shop with our supplies, and I posted a small advert saying, "Howdy partners! Southwest Apparel, will be back up soon with a fresh invetory! Come by for all your six shooter, and furniture needs!" After we finished building up everything, and opened the door we got flocked with people. Had a line of almost five people.... Felt good to be honest. Meant Rick, and I were doing good. The next thing which happened though... Told me all I needed to know about the majority of the admin team. A group of admins whom were police ran into the shop, and told everyone to get on the ground, and that it was an apparent raid. I told everyone to remain calm, and asked the, 'deputy' what was the issue. He shot at me, and shouted, "GET ON THE FUCKING GROUND." oh.... I got on the ground alright. My buddy Rick got on the ground earlier, but he hadn't told me how he put on his 'safety' shotgun on, and he popped over the desk, and shouted, "LEAVE." the officers went, "HOLY FUCK GUN,GUN,DSFSFDGFSD" and tried shooting him, but missed horridly, and Rick blew their brains out. The next thing I know the admins get everyone out of our shop, and begin bitching at Rick, and I for rdming them. We asked really simply, "What you mean..? You shot at us, and one of us was already beneath the desk where we kept our shotgun" the higher up admin came in, and asked why everyone was forced out of the shop, and the cops basically responded, "WELL THEY RDMED US, AND POWER GAMED" of course the head admin didn't ask us, and banned us straightforward for a week with the reason, "RDM'ing Admins"
Yup. That's my little adventure into PE's PERP(when PE was still alive, and not VG). I could also tell a story of how I ran Lorux or whatever the guys name off the road as a firefighter, and got the police force, medical force, and otherewise to rebel against him for imposing taxes against the people, and it got all of us a three day ban each.
OP answer is simple, either find good players that want to have a good time pretenting to be RPing whatever they want or get the gamemode to do it for you.
I see what you're getting at, Geikkamir, and while that may be fun sometimes to some people, it often doesn't hold up in the long run.

I actually do enjoy serious RP when it's done right, the problem is, just about every single serious RP server I've ever played has never actually gotten anywhere. It was just the same thing over and over and over again. "TALK AROUND AND DEVELOP YOUR CHARACTERS" Except you can't do that because you can't actually DO anything, and there's nothing to talk about because your characters have nothing interesting to say, because they've never DONE anything. Whenever I actually try to develop a character, I'm always "BEING UNREALISTIC" or "BREAKING THE CANON." It's a never ending cycle.
And the counter-argument is always "WELL IF WE DIDN'T HAVE STRICT RULES, IT WOULD BECOME DARKRP." Fine then, take that risk, because to be honest, I'd much rather play DarkRP than make small talk with bland, boring characters over and over and over. At least in DarkRP, something actually happens, even if it's not great RP, at least it's SOMETHING.
I mean honestly, do just about anything to advance the plot will get you banned. If I had tried that "I am secretly his evil twin brother, the one that killed your family!" Thing on a serious RP server, it would instantly be met with "OMG POWERGAME, ADMIN PL0X BAN."
I dunno, maybe I bitch too much, maybe some people really do enjoy that type of RP, but I just can't understand how people find that fun.
I know what you mean, and sadly this is a growing problem within Garry's Mod roleplay... They put way too strict rules, which actually forces the player to behave a certain way IC, which is wrong.
My idea of a good RP experience would be some rules that stops things such as metagaming, then let the players develop their characters however they want. If it's HL2RP, feel free to take chances, don't follow the canon blindly.
