Fast Download of Map - Progress Bar goes backwards??
6 replies, posted
Ok, I have the map
gm_construct_flatgrass_v6
in my FastDL Directory in a maps folder.
It starts downloading to me, it starts strangely at 6 bars, then after a wee while, it drops to 5 bars....
How come?
Everything else seems to work with FastDL, Although some clients have crashed occasionally.
Any ideas?
It could just be a loading bug, does it actually effect the speed at which it loads?
After testing, I was able to fast dl the map.
But a big chunk of my player base r reporting crashing on the fast DL.
Eg they get to the downloading of the map or of the cache and then bam!!! They get a Hl2 error - Application error.
This is happening more often than not.
Any one encounter clients getting crashed via Fast DL?
As far as I know, you can't just make one file FastDL, if you want to use FastDL, everything that you want your clients to download, (including the cache) must be bzip'd and uploaded to the FastDL server. I'm not sure why they would be crashing, however them not having the cache, and probably quite a few other things your server uses custom could in theory cause their game to crash.
edit: Do not upload .cfg files or .lua to the FastDL server.
I've pretty much duplicated the models, materials, sounds, cache, etc folders in the fast DL, they aren't bZipped because I understood that to be an optional extra.
Some people do manage to get into the server others, not so much.
I wonder if it's something to do with the maps res file.
Should it be stored in resources on the fast DL, or in the maps folder?
If you have a friend or something that is crashing when they join the server, get them to check their steam dumps folder, and upload to http://dumps.garrysmod.com you may be able to see what's crashing them, if not send it to Garry and he could possibly provide information.
(Also I believe you're correct about it being optional, however it's quite an awesome optional, you should think about it. From Wiki: Bzip2 can reduce a file's size by up to 75%. )
Edit: As for the res, FastDL is just mirroring the server, so whatever directory the file is on the game server, it should be in the same directory on the web server, this excludes some addons because their materials and models may need to be moved to the correct folder if you aren't using SourceRSC.
Note - I think I read on wiki, that as of version 81 or something, Maps are automatically compressed before being sent, so adding compression of our own, can increase the file size?
In any case, I find that about 2/3rds of the players who join my server, are crashing.
I need to figure it out, unfortunately, its hard to reproduce.
I guess I can try
1. Rename my Addons folder - locally
2. Remove Map Content - locally
attempt a jaunt onto the server.
And see if I can get a crash.
