• Alternative to Donator/VIP

I was eating some apple pie when I thought about that. I think everyone is aware of the need for many servers to run a donor / donation rewarding system so that the owner can pay for the server when in most cases they don't have the paychecks to do so. Now here is what I though as an alternative, it might be completely dumb but let me know what you think. When you would join the server for the first time you would have for example 1 hour to play around and find out if you like the server. You would then have to pay a monthly subscription of around 0.80USD (this would change depending on your player base and the monthly server fees) so that you could play on the server. This would obviously only work on a server with exclusive content as this probably wouldn't work on your everyday TTT server. Now tell me, would you rather play on a server monetized with a F2P economy like most servers or play on a server with a small monthly subscription. NOTE: This is not an idea for EuRP don't freak out.
I don't really think this would work considering a player has to spend money just to play and most players don't want to spend money just to play on a server.
One way I wanted to approach donations when I was apart of a community 2 years ago. Donations would benefit everyone instead of just one person. Kinda like kickstarter if more people pitch in more we unlock.
Well, I think this really depends. I personally think it's a bad idea, but gmod players are idiots so who knows. I think the biggest factor to this would be getting it off the ground; no one is going to pay for a server that only has a few people or where half of the player base soon is kicked. You need to give people a reason why not only should they play and stay, but also pay money as well.
Doubt it'd work, maybe for exclusive gamemodes only, like GMTower and such, otherwise the players would just join a different server.
please dont give server owners ideas. i paid 10 dollars for the game already, i shouldnt have to pay a dollar per month per server i wanted to play on because the owner is so fucking poor he cant pay for his own shit also im really starting to wish garry says fuck it and disallows people to monetize their servers. the servers these days are so low quality and mundane is fucking disgusting. full of coderhire scripts and pointshops with 50 skins you only get from donating

No no no fucking way!! Who they fuck will be willing to pay 1dollar per month Just to play on a server.
Here is the only solution that everyone will accept without whining: - A kind server owner pays for the entire bill themselves. Sadly, anything else will cause complaints. Plan B: - Move to somewhere that has a good unlimited connection. - Buy a dedicated machine with a good CPU and 1.5G + of RAM - Slap a solar panel outside - Run the server with no energy bill.
I'd rather people donate because they wanted to, not because they have to for features. Also, I shouldn't owe donors anything - if they're donating they better mean it and be happy with the project. Otherwise, it's no longer a donation but a payment for service, and I'm not looking to serve anyone just because they have a little extra money to spend for a free gamemode. [editline]16th August 2014[/editline] Forcing your players to donate every month doesn't qualify as a donation, but a fee. Forcing your players to donate to reach functionality isn't a donation, but a price. People keep using the word "donation" without understanding what the word means.

I think giving a rank is fine as long as you restrict it. An example is I have point shop points given to donators, a special icon in chat, a flashy name and a couple of limited voting commands, such as votekick and voteban for 60 mins. Its a one-off payment, which I think is fair, and it brings in just enough money to keep mys servers running.

Even though several server owners just pocket the money, it sounds a whole lot nicer to say "You're donating to keep the server bill paid for, and you get some benefits too!".
Couldn't you just have people earn VIP somehow and have a way to donate for it as well, instead of forcing someone to pay money each month for some special classes? Players would be happy with the options and funds would still come in for server owners, because of people wanting benefits without working for them. Could see that working for any donation benefits people add to their servers.

When i managed a server, the only benefits that people got for donating was aesthetic (Color name on scoreboard, fancy tag on chatbox and a name on a "donators" wall of fame), trying to always avoid P2W shit. Now, whenever i see a server, it's like "first wait 30 minutes to download all the VIP only playermodels, then see how VIP people is playing while you can't do anything funny"... #RantOver
All this will achieve is people playing for an hour, being asked to "donate" and then never visiting again.
Agreed, I run a ZS server, that I pay out of my pocket. Yes, I have donations for like reskins, but people complain because its not p2w so really its just me paying for it myself xD.
